Soch le bhai what you want to say, seeking perfect combo for home series and quoting 1-4 in Eng :hmmmm2:

Let me make it clear . We need 6 batsmen who can form the core that can perform brilliantly as a unit in any of SENA. Then only we can even start dreaming of winning series in  any of SENA.As of now I see only 2 ( Kohli & Rahane) out of 6  eligible  for these slots. Other 4 are still  far from adequate. If we play a 6-1-4 in India, then we can play several combo of 6 batsmen to test their mettle  which is the first step towards that process  of winning in SENA. But playin 5-1-5 combo we are wasting that 1 slot just as we did in the 2nd test vs WI.

Thakur proved virtually of no need . Hope I made it clear.

Well I think 5 bowlers is the way to go, it's gives options to the captain, however a spot should not be wasted on players like Pandya

Pant is a specialist batsman.

Averaged 55+ in  FC cricket before test debut.

Averaged 62 in  Unofficial test matches in England for our A-team.  Only Shaw did marginally better while the " more acceptable " specialist batters like Vihari and all others failed and Nair lagged behind too.

Has a test century in his debut series in England.

We are playing a  6 +  2 (AR) +  3  combo now.

yes  Pant would make the effect of a specialist batsman . 2 AR  From '3 of Ashwin,Pandya & Jadeja'  can take the other 2 slots depending on the conditions.   Then 3 specialist bowlers(Kuldeep in the mix too) as per the   conditions.

That would be most apt. Would provide the worth of 7 batsmen(2 all rounders combined gives 1 batsman) &  5 bowlers. That would be great.

That is the idea

Pant coming good is very important for the balance of the team.

One thing that worries me about him is that in Australia he has to show great restraint as he cannot attack each and every delivery for a four or a six hope he plays according to the situation.

Australia these days is one of the few places where attacking a higher percentage of deliveries actually works.   The pitches are usually very true to help that happen. The challenge would ofcourse be the steeper bounce.

However, Pant has shown restrain to some extent in England.  Did not go hammer and tongs.   So, he should be able to do it again.
