Vihari against short balls

for now, i would consider it a bad matchup against  Cummins. for a longer term problem, more evidence is required and against others as well.

Too early to tell but he is already showing that his temperament is better than Rahane, Yuvraj, Sharma, Rahul etc.

He needs to be given more time and more stability (not shuffled up and down the order at random) to gauge if he has the skills or not. 

Remember, Kallis averaged 7 runs with the bat after his first 7 tests. but his temperament was there for people to see.

Hope 1st they give him his position so he can play freely , this is very unfair on him to make him open

Vihari will gt back in middle order to replace Rohit as Prithvi Shaw and Mayank Agarwal would be preferred openers.

As for Vihari, he too does not look comfortable against short balls but he can easily overcome this if he works on this weakness.

 

Overall ... Vihari has not looked special to me.  But he can still make it in international cricket if he is a gritty person.

He reminds me of that guy who batted for Pak at #6 when India toured Pak in the early 2000s - Asim something.  Gritty batsman but doesn't have that ability to dominate the bowling.

He has technique to survive and even score runs on surfaces that has less bounce. But i wouldn't be too harsh on him on this pitch though. Pujara got hit alteast 6 or 7 times.  This pitch has a nasty nature of odd ball not getting high enough. He probably has a better surviving technique against short ball than this.

You don’t habe to have the best pull shot to tackle short.. Should have the tenacity to duck and be able to respond to short in some

conservative strokes. Benefit of doubt to Vihari for now as he has been thrown in against one of the fatest bowling attacks. Also, he is doing a thankless job for us right now playing the musical chair to open the batting.

 

All in all, he must improve comfidence to tackle the short stuff, but I won’t worry too much for now.

 

Not having a great game against short ball isn’t the end of the world. You can find ways to negate your limitations, like Kohli did with his off-side game or Dravid did during the twilight of his career where he started getting bowled all of a sudden but later rectified by going back to his old ways.

Upto Vihari how he responds. Even other teams will be watching.

 

I suspect long term Shaw will be opener with him playing at 6 and chipping in with 10-12 overs a day.
