Jadeja and Shankar

Let's look at the two perceived ARs, who are among the 2-3 lucky ones that have managed to find a spot in the squad:

  • Fielding: Both of them are good/assets. However, Jadeja holds an edge
  • Bowling: Jadeja can play as a specialist so is expected to bowl his quota. Shankar, at best, can chip in 2-4 overs. Can be useful in conditions where the ball can swing. Advantage Jadeja
  • Batting: Both have a first-class batting average of 47. In List A, both have 2 100s. Jadeja likes to become a hero so will not give his wkt away even if RRR is climbing. May not sacrifice his wkt in an unfortunate runout situation even if he has just walked in and the guy at the other end is on 99. Vijay on potential gets more points but implodes under pressure. If Ind is chasing, it is likely that Vijay would not even want to go out to bat. The batting could be a wash but I will give a slight edge to Shankar here

Their best place could be the bench or as substitute fielders but if they have to be drafted in the 11, how to make the best use of them? In the top 5, both of them are not the best options but Shankar holds an edge. Lower down, Jadeja holds an edge. Credit to Vijay Shankar though for making Sir Jadeja appear competitive in white ball cricket.

I don't know why but I laughed way  too hard on this.  :phehe:

And one more thing

Jadeja can't play as a specialist bowler.

Teams will target his 10 overs if he bowls full quota and we all know how he bowls when targeted.

Jadeja has been around for a very long time. IPL, Test cricket, ODI, T20. Shankar is just starting up. Jaddu is world no.6 Test match bowler. But his batting is not fluke. He cannot play certain type of balls even by fluke. Chest height, ball leaving him on the off side. Only ball he can play is pitched full with no deviation. It comes down to the pitch. If the pitch is dry and is expected to aid spin it will be Jaddu. If the condition is overcast and ball is likely to offer natural swing then Shankar. Don't expect too much from either of them. Shankar has to understand his game limitations first. He is not a cross batted slogger. Every single time he cross bats he gets out.

At this point, Jadeja appears to be ahead of Shankar, who as I said is making Jadeja appear competitive in white ball cricket

Why not take Bhuvi out... and play Jadhav/Shankar.Bhuvi has not had an impact for a long time.

That can be an option if Shankar or Jadhav are batting well. I am not sure about Jadhav’s fitness and form. Shankar, if he is going to score 20-30s or less, Bhuvi at least can bowl a few overs .... in short, would depend upon their batting form. Otherwise, the team would be just picking the 11 for the paper

There is no way in hell they will go with a super light batting side with fake all rounders when you consider Dhoni is on his last legs and pandya is not exactly your bat for 30 over guy and KL Rahul a frightened turtle on big stage. They will load the side with batsmen. Shankar or Jadhav will be certainly be in the playing XI.  They will back Kuldeep. Despite his form he is a genuine wicket taker. He can trigger a collapse. You can't say the same about Bhuvi. If Bhuvi can't do anything with new ball that is pretty  much it.

Jadeja is a good batsman, but just isn't explosive enough. Assest in Tests, but below average in ODIs and T20s (For batting position he bats at)

For some reason he has created this perception of able strike at 150 strike rate, but those type of innings from him are so rare

And he is so weak putting away deliveries down leg stump that it's almost pathetic how many times henna got out to leg stump line

He is a decent no.8. Terrible no.7 or no.6.

Unfortunately for team Ind, his competition is Shankar who makes Jadeja appear competitive    .... Jadhav has also regressed. Not sure about his current form and fitness

Both will need to play

if overcast conditions shankar may get a few overs

as regards batting - he is not bad . Tall guy can play short ball well - his batting in nz was very good

think it’s fair to say our starting 11 is now settled

jadhav in spin friendly pitches and Shankar in seam friendly

Jadeja is decent at what he does but dont expect anything special. But Shankar is absolutely mediocre. His bowling is military medium, has done nothing with the bat to prove he can actually make a contribution other than a cameo here and there. He is very lucky to be in Indian X1 let alone the World Cup. Hopefully, he will continue to warm the bench for the entire WC.

Jadhav is the best available if you ask me. He is more a batsman that can do things. HE has got 121 in 77 balls. His career strike rate is over 100. He is averaging over 40. He can dart a few overs. Don't want either Shankar or Jaddu. Both will be useless. Going into a match with Jaddu at 7 is like Delhi capitals walking in with Axar patel batting at 6.

If no chance of rain,Jadeja plays ahead of both Jadhav & Shankar.

If chance of rain, can't play all 3 spinners.3 pacers,Hardik,2 leggies form the bowling attack.Neither Jadeja/Shankar will play.

We do not know about Jadhav's fitness and form. Shankar has played himself out of contention. Not sure if DK will be considered for his batting alone. So the remaining ones are likely to be the 12 unless Jadhav inspires confidence to TM in the next week.
