Cricket and its Future - is it Dying?

I know I haunt these forums now and then, but couldn't help observe a pattern wherein my interest in cricket is dipping day in day out. Various possibilities include like growing up, being in a different continent etc.

 

I just wanted to see if this is a common trend or isolated one . I am a 90s kid who grew up in flats, with not many cars, no cable TV in initial years, no computers, internet, mobile phone and video games , no Facebook, WhatsApp, TikTok,youtube.The only source of entertainment was playing cricket .

 

Now with so many entertainment alternatives, unavailability of playing spaces in flats or areas, lack of interest in game amongst other countries , shorter attention span for people, is the interest still there at same levels?

 

I believe there are different personas here. With different perspectives.  Would like to hear your two cents.

Too many “has beens” in team Ind. Once exciting young blood is drafted in, interest will improve .... This WC was a good opportunity to bring some youngsters to the fore

Not just the WC. I think as a sport it needs to evolve to make it more inclusive rather than trying to do it over specific cricket grounds and TV. In the US every sport is an entertainment, while in India, IPL is the only one. Cricket is competing against YouTube and video games , not against other sports. I think administrator s would do better to understand that and make it a more 360 degree experience. People who don't understand or play cricket should be able to enjoy it. That should be the goal.

It most likely will survive in India and sub continent but I dont see a bright future for this sport in England and Australia. Too much competition from football,

Agreed. I never liked baseball but when I went in there for a local game , I could definitely see myself be intrigued by the entertainment quotient of the other periphery activities and environment . I just feel leave apart IPL, the regular matches do not provide so much entertainment. Want to know how the 20 year olds feel. When I was growing up , elders in my neighborhood were also genuinely interested in cricket . So when interest dips in elders how can children pick it up.?

they show ALL (test , LoI) local (state) matches on Jio cricket channels. If you want the old touch, you could watch those.... commentary is good old styled relaxed...not the horrendous IPL style.

 

IPL commentary is THE biggest put-off for me

I think problem with cricket in there huge discrepancy in pay and interest

in the regards to pay while Indian first class player gets good pay I don't think apart from Australia and England others have structure where they can just survive with their county cricket income  they have do something else aswell in football if you are from small Asian/african nation if you decently good enough you can play in Europe team and earn well and play  country but  in cricket others countries don't get much opportunity only in IPL there is around some 50 slots at most 

 

With interest apart from Asian every where else there is not much interest in cricket and also with IPL etc bought with foucus  India audience  other countries  are losing viewers in cricket  and with India being so strong(Specially media claims) we don't get satisfaction when beat other teams like in when beat Australia in early 2000's

Let me break down the state of cricket in every nation participating in the WC:

 

India: No matter what people here say, It is still the most popular sport there and is one binding different ethnicities in a hugely diverse country. Football still has a long way to go and the Indian cricket team is one of the best as well so they dont have anything to worry about.

Pakistan: Same as India but how pathetic their team has become, Rich kids are quickly losing interest in this sport.

Bangladesh: The fact that they are no more minnows, The cricket is well and alive in Bangladesh.

SL: Their team is pathetic and from what I hear from Sri Lankans, Cricket is fast losing its popularity in SL and more people shifting towards other sport like Rugby.

SA: It's a heavily white people sport in SA and very slight minority of blacks enjoy it at all and colored also enjoy it but now that their team is getting worse, The cricket is on life support in SA.

NZ: Cricket is way behind Rugby as the most popular support in NZ and a sizeable population still follow it so its pretty good.

Australia: Its a Summer sport there and is heavily dominated AFL during the season so its similar to NZ but a lot more people are interested in cricket in Australia.

WI: This is one area about which I have no idea about because it seems that people in that region are more interested in athletics and Basketball but there was a sizeable Windies crowd when I went to watch Pak vs WI.

England: Its quite confusing here because people on normal days hardly care about cricket but I saw a lot more white people talking about cricket here in past few days than before. Its still far behind other major sports like football and Rugby.

Afghanistan: There is a huge perception that cricket is very popular in Afghanistan and thats not true at all. Cricket is only popular among Pashtuns in Afghanistan and people who lived in Pak as refugees. There are many other ethnicities in Afghanistan like Tajik, Hazara, Uzbeks and you hardly see anyone of them playing in Afghanistan team thats why you see many Afghanistan players speaking Urdu because most of them had lived in Pakistan and you wouldnt see a Dari speaking player in Afghanistan team because its not popular among them.

This bit is interesting. Had no idea. So all the 15 members in afg are pak refugee?

May not be Pak refugees but all of them are Pashtuns. Pashtuns who account for 40% of the population in Afghanistan were  the largest refugee group in Pakistan,  got exposure to Cricket and learned the game in Pakistan and spread it to other Pashtuns in Afghanistan so Cricket  has become a Pashtun dominated Sport in Afghanistan. The other communities in Afghanistan like  Tajiks ( 20 % ), Uzbeks (10 %) and Hazaras (10% ) hardly have any representation in either the administration of Cricket or among the player-base in Afghanistan. Football is the most popular Sport among the Tajiks,  Uzbeks and Hazaras of Afghanistan just like their parent countries ( Tajikistan,  Uzbekistan,  Iran)  in Central Asian regions.

Interesting. Hence the interview of Rashid Khan stating that he started dreaming of playing for AFG when he saw Imran Khan lifting the cup ... Lol! How old is this uncle?
