Sehwag feels India had greater clarity under Dhoni

Kohli doesn’t have the balls to drop someone like Dhawan from T20. Dhoni I can understand he couldn’t drop him even if he wanted to with his pr and media pressure and all that.

I would like to believe that for whatever reason good or bad Dhoni did make a few calls dropping seniors. He may or may not have done it but he obviously sold that snake oil like a champ with we are all servants of the game dramebazi bs.

This might be the rare occasions I will defend

Dhoni.

Kohli’s team management and player backing has been very poor even worse than Dhoni’s

I have seen half a dozen indian captains , we always had issues with 1-2 questionable selections , there was always a captains favorite ..but 8-9 players always picked themselves . What Virat is doing is criminal .

Pujara - survived , though cant forget he was dropped for Rohit in WI . it could have easily destroyed his career.

Vijay - screwed royally , again dropped for his buddy when he was arguably the best opener .

KL - barely surviving , dropping him in SA when he was in form for a proven test failure Dhawan .

Kuldeep

Pant

Rahane - you dont pick Rohit sharma ahead of Rahane in a away test match .

Vihari  - hes going out soon .

Karun Nair - 300 and out

samson - 6 and out ?

I may have missed few other players , not necessarily i think all of them are great or even good players but the way they have been handled is really unfortunate . I know a few years later people will forget , they will just pull stats ..VJ for eg , you will never know how well he played in those away test matches and should have cemented his place for 2 years at least with those performances .

Only on this forum Vijay is touted and for last 2 years he was junk. Junk. Others I canagree with.

Rahul is not in test playing 11 if Agarwal, Sharma and Shaw are fit. So workload wise he can take the load in LOI of keeper batsman. The concern here is quality though.

I say T20 is OK but ODI the work load is too much.

Add Jayant a Yadav (100 and a 5-er vs Eng in tests), Parwez Rasool, Rahul Chahar, Mayank Markande- all fully capable of scoring runs and taking wickets. Got to play a match or two and were discarded

Under Dhoni, there were two distinct phases

2008-2011 with Gary Kirsten at coach: This was the period when there was greater clarity largely due to Kirsten’s influence. Even during this phase, the tussle between Dhoni and Sehwag-Yuva kept bubbling over

2011-15 with Fletcher as the rubber stamp coach: After the 2011 WC win, Dhoni became a complete autocrat due to Sreeni’s power and started targeting any player he disliked. Nepotism, chamchagiri, groupism, PR power all were at their peak in this phase. A rot that set in our cricket which has now been perpetuated by Kohli

Dhoni did back some players he believed in like Rohit, Ishant, Raina, Jadeja but none of them were his handpicked selections bar maybe Jadeja. It is like giving Srikkanth credit for Sachin. He also had his likes and dislikes.

nobody is handpicked in our system like the stories goes around with imran

We have a proper system

Everyone has likes n dislikes.....point is u back the ones u like. Kohli cant even do that

Sreeshanth was one of his victims. Could have backed Uthappa a lot more, Gambhir had atleast 2-3 years left in him, Ignored Umesh a lot etc.

sreesanth was his own victim

uthappa- opening slot wasnt avl , he cud have been useful in lower order but that was also packed then

gambhir cudnt even touch the ball in 2014 eng series and once he changed his stance he wasnt same he became slow on ball. Also we forget once dhawan n rohit opened it shut doors on other openers

But he has given clarity to his Delhi buddy Dhawan, that his position is safe even at the cost of team's performance. I am not sure what more Sehwag want from him.

Anyways not nitpicking and I am agreeing with Sehwag when he says Dhoni was a better man-manager than Virat.

Virat comes across as someone who wants readymade players. All the fast bowlers in tests have matured and peaked at the same time  and this has coincided with Kohli's captaincy. Now while some of their peak might have been lost under Dhoni who believed spin is king, Virat has a different philosophy to go with pace.

Look man to man every captain has their pros and cons. There are a lot of good things in Virat's captaincy too however on this point I am with Sehwag.

Back in those days (2010-11 I guess), the chatter used to be that Dhoni would back any young players if they were being managed by Arun Pandey's  Sports Management firm Rhiti Sports (in which Sakshi Dhoni had a stake).

Yes, there were a few players who knew they would never be selected..even if selected, not played. Definitely more clarity..

Dhoni did have not much choice and he was fond of trundlers. The team selected themselves when Dhoni first started as a captain.

Kohli and Shastri are doing just fine, if player don't grab their chances it is not their problem.
