nevada Posted January 21, 2020 Posted January 21, 2020 (edited) Sehwag believes despite his dazzling show Rahul might not able to save his position in the middle order if he fails in the next few outings. “If KL Rahul fails four times batting at No 5, the current Indian team management will look to change his slot. However, same wasn’t the case with Dhoni, who knew how important it is to back players at such positions, having himself gone through the hard grind,” Sehwag told Cricbuzz. Known for his swashbuckling style of play and fearless approach – Sehwag said that there was greater clarity about team selection when MS Dhoni was the captain. "With MS Dhoni as captain, there was greater clarity with regards to each player’s position in the batting unit. He had an eye for talent and had identified individuals who would take Indian cricket forward,” Sehwag added. Edited January 21, 2020 by nevada Mosher, Cricwala, sergio04 and 3 others 6
zen Posted January 21, 2020 Posted January 21, 2020 The current players are under more pressure for their place. Before I go into my opinion, I would like to point out a few things about past: The "identified" talent pool was relatively small The gap b/w domestic and international was greater Captains understood that if they had an ATG talent like Sehwag, he had to be persisted with when new The competition for spots was less intense The pressure to win every game was less Today, we can understand the rotation because of the improvements we have made over the years. However, it looks ridiculous when you are a top batsmen, bowler or a WK, and you get injured/rotated only to find your place unsecure. There should be some policy where: Players feel secure about their positions and roles Youngsters (Under 27) esp if they have been fast tracked to international cricket should be given a relatively longer run Before a series, it should be planned who plays in which games (to avoid confusion and unnecessary competition) and the info communicated to the players esp. if everyone is being rotated. This would also depend upon the length of the series and the position Ind is in. For e.g. In a 3 match series. if Ind is 2-0 (or 0-2) xyz will come in place of abc in game 3. if Ind is 1-1, that change may not happen or will happen depending upon situation. Such initiatives would give clarity to both those in the 11 and on the bench Mosher 1
Khota Posted January 21, 2020 Posted January 21, 2020 (edited) I have no idea what Sehwag is talking about. Rahul position is very secure. Edited January 21, 2020 by Khota

Straight Drive Posted January 21, 2020 Posted January 21, 2020 I thought Seniors did not like Dhoni considering he phased them out citing fielding as one fo the reason which did not please previous seniors. Surprised to know Sehwag is appreciating Dhoni. Thought he would back Kohli just for that.

Fielding was getting affected by fitness or lack of agility of some senior players at that point of career.

If we give so much weightege to feilding than kohli along with few other indian player should drop themselves the way they drop catches in test matches. nevada 1
The Dark Horse Posted January 21, 2020 Posted January 21, 2020 Yeah Dhoni never gave chances to new players..so it's like a government job..more clarity Straight Drive and raki05 2

But from what I remember, think fitness issues and fielding was given as reason in some press statement.

Here Sehwag is talking about players trying to adjust in a new batting position .... Also it is not as simple as making blank statements as itt . depends upon the stage a player is in for e.g. experienced vs. someone who is new .... and options available Edited January 21, 2020 by zen
jusarrived Posted January 21, 2020 Posted January 21, 2020 I have seen half a dozen indian captains , we always had issues with 1-2 questionable selections , there was always a captains favorite ..but 8-9 players always picked themselves . What Virat is doing is criminal . Pujara - survived , though cant forget he was dropped for Rohit in WI . it could have easily destroyed his career. Vijay - screwed royally , again dropped for his buddy when he was arguably the best opener . KL - barely surviving , dropping him in SA when he was in form for a proven test failure Dhawan . Kuldeep Pant Rahane - you dont pick Rohit sharma ahead of Rahane in a away test match . Vihari - hes going out soon . Karun Nair - 300 and out samson - 6 and out ? I may have missed few other players , not necessarily i think all of them are great or even good players but the way they have been handled is really unfortunate . I know a few years later people will forget , they will just pull stats ..VJ for eg , you will never know how well he played in those away test matches and should have cemented his place for 2 years at least with those performances . vijaydude, Cricspin, velu and 6 others 1 8

A couple other names to add: Siraj - Played in T20s and thrown out even though he was selected on basis of longer format performance Iyer - Dropped previously even after performance and now being thrown around in batting order
