Even during classic era when Andre the Giant, Hulk Hogan, Ultimate Warrior etc were stars....WWF was a PG show. Maybe the content were not as dull as today but it was all about good guy (Hulk Hogan) is beating evil big giants (Andre the giant, Kamala etc.).Then Ted Turner launched WCW and introduced NITRO which was a straight competition to WWF Raw. People by around 1995 were already bored with WWF and started watching exciting new product i e WCW Nitro. WWF started incurring huge loss and Nitro was beating WWF in ratings every monday night. WCW also bought all WWF superstars like Hulk Hogan, Diesel, Razor Ramon, Jeff Jarett etc. The only star left in WWF was Bret Hart and they simply wanted to get rid of him as they couldnt afford him. It resulted in Montreal screwjob and thats a different story.After Bret left, WWF was left with only young talents like Austin, HBK, Triple H, Rock etc and ever falling ratings. Then Vince decided enough is enough and decided to take PG programming out and put it into TV14. That was the beggining of Attitude era and it was basically an adult show where blood, sex, profanity, going off script...every damn thing was allowed. Gone are the days of good guys always beating bad dudes....attitude era was all about anti heros. The main protagonist of attitude era was a defiant rebel employee (Steve Austin) showing middle finger and kicking his boss's a$$ (Vince McMahon). Attitude era was also more about gimmick, back stage drama, edgy catchphrases than just wrestling. I mean WWE today cant even think of having some of the gimmics like back then - Undertaker crucifying Steve Austin, The Godfather riding a HO train, DX driving a tank to WCW show live, Austin filling McMahon's car with cement, Kane burning JR alive, Gangrel drinking Blood, Al Snow with doll head, character of Mankind where he was thrown from top of a cage etc. etc.Attitude era was so popular...that eventually WCW went out of business and Vince bought it in 2001. He decided to end Attitude era in 2002 as it was no longer needed since no competition but didnt go PG all together. They decided to settle for something in between and named it as Ruthless Agression era which was not as edgy as Attitude era but way better than PG. Some of my favourite Ruthless era moments were Hollywood Heel Rock dissing Toronto crowds, Goldberg debut and his feud with Rock, Austin returns as Sheriff, rapper John Cena, Muhammad Hassan character etc. The Raw and Smackdown rivalry was best potrayed in Ruthless Agression era.Then in 2007 Linda McMahon was running for Senate and Vince didnt wanted any bad reputation for his company. WWE is sadly PG since then which is totally a kids show now and wrestlers dont have permission to even say a word without script. CM Punk tried but they cut his mike in mid show.WWE will never go back to its glory days again especially with Vince is so old now. Missed a lot of good stuff though I later caught up with their exciting segments thanks to YT. 'Ruthless Aggression' was an awesome time to be a pro wrestling fan, WWE found the right balance. Also my fav version of Taker, the American Badass, his Deadman gimmick has been mostly boring. Edited March 17, 2020 by Gollum
