According to the report published in the New Indian Express, Adwaita Nagar Social Reforms Committee is behind the fatwa, and they have prescribed monetary penalties and punishments in case anyone is found violating the orders. The village has a population of 12,000, and it is located along the West Bengal-Jharkhand border. Azharul Sheikh, the secretary of Adwaita Nagar Social Reforms Committee, said in his statement that the committee has decided to impose a ban on a series of activities. The Fatwa aims to stop the young generation from adopting methods that will lead to ‘moral and cultural degradation’. “We cannot allow them to listen to music and watch movies and serials which do not fit our religious culture,” he added. The Fatwa was issued on 9th August, and the committee has pasted posters informing the residents of the village about the consequences for violating the dictate. Here is a list of punishments prescribed by the committee. Rs.1,000 fine if anyone found watching television or using mobile phone or computer to listen to music. Rs.500 fine if anyone found playing carom. Rs.2,000 for purchasing lottery. Rs.7,000 for selling liquor. The person’s head will be shaved, and he will be paraded in the village. Rs.7,000 for running a gambling racket or selling lottery tickets. Rs.2,000 for consuming alcohol and ten sit-ups holding ears (uthak-baithak). Asharul said that if someone informs about a violation of rules, he or she will be rewarded by the committee with Rs.1,000 to Rs.2,000 depending on the nature of the offence reported. Abdur Rauf, the Pradhan of the Trinamool Congress dominated Vasaipaikar panchayat said that there is nothing wrong in the Fatwa. He claimed that banning liquor is a good decision. “I welcome the decision to ban carom and songs using mobile phones because the youths are getting addicted to it,” he added as per the NIE report.

Mohammad Maqsud Alam, imam of a mosque in Chandipur in Harishchandrapur, issued the fatwa against the match saying: “Wearing shorts and tight clothes by women is against sharia. It’s a sin to watch such a game. I had told the villagers about it and they stopped the match.” He said the villagers petitioned the district administration to stop the match in which women were to take part. The match was organised by the Progressive Youth Club to celebrate its golden jubilee in which national-level players were to participate. The club’s office bearers petitioned the district administration under the RTI Act and asked the reason for not permitting the match to be held. Interestingly, a majority of the club members were Bengali Muslims and they strongly decried the move. Club president Reja Razi said, “An exhibition match between Kolkata XI and North Bengal XI was planned in which national-level women footballers were to play to encourage young women to participate in sports and games. We had sought permission months ago and it was granted. But we never imagined the administration would bow down to such evil forces citing law and order problems.” Clerics issue 'fatwa' to cancel women's football match in Bengal Quote In what is another blow to women’s rights and the sporting community, a women’s football match was cancelled on Saturday after Muslim clerics objected to women playing football – barely a week after International Women's Day. According to The Times of India, The match was to be held in Harishchandrapur but had to be called off to avoid any untoward incidents from protests. The match was organized by Progressive Youth Club, a club in Chandipur village, and it was to be held to celebrate their golden jubilee. It was to have national level women players from across the country who were supposed to take part. The organizers had even got permission to hold the match and it was to be played between two teams – North Bengal XI and Kolkata XI. Players like Santi Mallik (an Arjuna awardee), Krishna Das, Sujata Kar, FIFA referee Anamkia Sen and even the national handball team captain Anita Roy were supposed to play. Club president Reja Razi also said that there was ‘great enthusiasm about the event among local people’. Clerics allegedly issue fatwa to stop women’s football match But Muslim clerics raised their voice against the event and did not want to see women wearing kits that were “too tight” playing a football match. Razi said: “Last week, some moulavis raised their objection to the women's football match. We had approached the block administration and the sub-divisional officer for help. “On March 11, a meeting was also held in the presence of BDO between us and the fundamentalists who were against the match. The next day, many more clerics said a women's match would be against Islam. “They also threatened to make a stronger agitation if the match was held. The BDO then ordered to stop the match," he explained. It was also reported that Trinamool Congress MLA Sabitri Mitra also supported the ban. Even BDO Biplab Roy said his hands were tied and had no choice but to cancel the match: “We had to cancel the football match because of a possible deterioration in law and order situation.” What next, will full blown sharia be implemented in certain districts to save secularism? Will Islamists stop there? We see what is happening in another secular country Nigeria which has allowed sharia in Muslim provinces and now the Islamists in govt want that barbaric system all over the country. Capital punishment in blasphemy and apostasy related cases, death by stone pelting for adultery, scenes like this for not covering the head. What Bengal thinks today, India thinks tomorrow. They held a rally, one of the largest in the history of the state, a couple of years ago at Maidan to support the 1971 war criminals. It is clear what they think of India, Indian Army, Bengali Hindus, tolerance etc. But yeah keep remaining in denial.

Hasn't SC declared fatwas illegal/unconstitutional .... if so, these guys should be jailed for violation

The incident came to light at Kanglapahari village under Nalhati police station in the district, a Hindu-dominated village located near Bengal-Jharkhand border under Rampurhat sub-division. The organisers knocked the doors of the district administration and submitted their plea to the office of the district magistrate, police superintendent, sub-divisional officer (SDO) and sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) of Rampurhat and Block Development Officer (BDO) of Nalhati-I on September 1. But no response have come so far. REPEATEDLY DENIED PERMISSION TO PUJA COMMITTEE All the district administrative machinery repeatedly denied permission to the puja committee, Kanglapahari Durga Mandir Committee, following objections by about 25 Muslim families in the village. In the past three years, the local administration, panchayat and Nalhati police jointly prevented puja organisers from hosting the puja on the grounds of law and order issues. "I don't know about the matter. I have not received anything as of now. Once I get it, I will definitely consider the matter," Birbhum SP N Sudheer Kumar told Mail Today on phone. The appeal was first submitted to the offices of the DM and SP on September 1 this year, and again followed up on September 23. "On Friday too, we went to the SP and DM's office to submit our second appeal. But there was no positive development," said Chandan Sau of Kanglapahari Durga Mandir Committee. Sau said that since they have not been able to organise the annual festivity in their village, all women and children have to travel three to eight kilometres to celebrate the occasion in nearby villages. DURGA IDOLS LIE HALF DONE "A piece of land has already been donated by a villager, Mohanlal Sau, to construct a mud temple in the village where the puja can be organised peacefully. We don't have to erect any pandal (marquee) as we have put up a mud structure with whatever little amount we could manage. Like the last three years, this year too we started constructing the Durga idol, which is now lying half-done. DONT WANT TO ANGER MUSLIMS District officials are not responding as they don't want to antagonise the Muslims," Sau said. When quizzed, Birbhum DM P Mohangandhi tactfully sidestepped the question. He said: "The formal procedure is to submit the appeal to the SDO and he's the person to issue the necessary permission depending on the law and order situation. " Dhruba Saha, a local resident, who took up the matter with the local administration, said that a petition had also been filed in Calcutta High Court and there is a hearing on Monday. Sources in the district Trinamool Congress said that police and other district officials have already held meetings at all block levels and finalised on the number of pujas that will be held across Birbhum this year. Thus, there is no question of allowing any new puja anywhere in the district. This kind of nonsense didn't happen even under Left rule. Check that women's football story, they issued fatwa and administration succumbed, no case nothing. Involved some top national level players, barely made news.
