Those who watched him live, how good was Richie Richardson?

Such a shame 90% of indian kids are  still being coached to play test match style when much more opportunities are available ODI and T20 .

huh?

Remember him from the 96 world cup for his 2 great innings vs Australia.
1) He anchored through a tough chase with a 50+ score in the group encounter with Australia.
2) In the famous semi-final, he was the last man standing at the non-striker's end when Walsh swished at thin air instead of giving him the strike. He didn't dominate but played the peak-Warne quite well in both the games and seemed a tough character. His full-blooded sweep shot which hit the umpire and denied him a certain boundary was a hot topic for couple of days since the margin was only 5 runs.

As a captain, he seemed more in Dhoni mode - calm and rarely showing emotions.

In the semi smacked a ball right into the face of the square leg umpire BC Cooray. It was a definite boundary but they ended up getting only one run. Eventually lost the match by 5.

Never heard in 80s until end of Viv Richards, they have had Pak style internal fights. A lot of statements camout against Richardson as well. Camps of Walsh, Lara, Hooper started to come out.   When Indian origin players started making it to the team, Sarwan, Ganga, Chanders were all sidelined. I had read about such discrimination from Kalicharan’s son as well, that his dad had to face esp after the rebel tour of SA. I think they don’t play well as a team.

You need to take a trip around India and see how players are being coached by out of date coaches . Obvious one day  and T20 young lads are all coached the same way as a 3/4/5 day player .

India should be so far Infront of other countries in all formats because of numbers but until they join the dots up between the three formats it will not happen .

That’s probably because they are not representing a country but a board.  Also may be we are not aware but there might be different cultures within the various islands and the equation of nationalism not being present, I would assume there would be a lot of infighting. I know that Guyana has a lot of Indian origin folk and their culture might be a little different.

This was not the case when they had a homogenous team till mid 90s when they were winning. When they start to lose, these things creep up

My mate Derrick Kallicharan when he left Scotland could not go home to Guyana because his brother  Alvin had gone to SA . He played in New York instead

All I remember was aggressive batting just like Vic Richards, successful against Australia. He batted well against India in 1989 series. He had personal issues with Richards and he was chosen over Haynes. He made the board drop Viv Richards for the 92 WC, not many Viv followers in India like him for that. He was the first captain to lose a series in 1995 from the 80s. He was dropped after 1996 WC with the team not liking him anymore. It was like what goes around comes around. Antiguan like Richards.

There was lot of in-fighting in the WI team during the WC. Richardson had originally planned to quit captaincy post WC but got so fed up he quit playing altogether. He was only 34.

With players like Lara, Hooper, Richardson, Adams, Walsh, Ambrose, Bishop and rising stars like Chanderpaul, Gayle, Hinds, Sarwan, Dillon, Ridley Jacobs (as good as Boucher) etc. WI should have done far better in late 90s and early 00s. Their slump post 1995 is shocking, didn't lack the personnel/quality. Couldn't gel well as a unit and team was weaker than sum of the parts. Maybe they missed a leader who could bring all the islanders together, Lara failed miserably at that.

Ambrose and Walsh were 32 and 33 respectively in that famous 1995 series. They declined and the supply of great fast bowlers ended with them, and the team lost its fearsome aura.

I have vague memories of him. Was a key batsmen for WI. Had a few big series as well if I am not wrong. Could have been more consistent.

Pakistan's shyyyte test match performances in the 21st century can be linked to 3 factors - Kolpaks in county cricket, reverse swing becoming more common knowledge along with the batsmen's ability to play it, and better camera coverage.

India is a continent - and the levels and quality of coaching will vary all over the place.  Its silly to take one or 2 instances and extrapolate across the whole damn country.  That's one.

Second, I'm actually quite happy if the coaches focus on grounding the fundamentals of batting technique - given the economic incentives at play, t20 slogging and bowling 'defense' will emerge on its own.
