As one final hurrah, Dhoni should bat in the top 3

For most of us, from admiration it turned into intense dislike and then it turned into comedy when it comes to MSD. Now it is at a stage where it just feels sad.

Dhoni was never a great finisher as he was made out to be, it was Yuvraj and Raina playing the main role to Dhoni’s supporting act. He had great cricket acumen so it worked perfectly for him in that role.

However what made Dhoni a hero initially was when he scored those daddy 100’s batting in the top 3 vs Pak and SL.

If you go back and watch those innings, Dhoni was not slam bang from ball 1, he built his innings and got his eye in before he went crazy.

May be we should see Dhoni bat in the top 3 as one final hurrah before we don’t see him on a cricket pitch ever again.

This is getting really tragic now.

A pointless thread as if as a captain Dhoni wanted to bat in the top 3, he could have done that earlier .... He could do that only if it is required

As I wrote on the match thread, Dhoni is lucky (difficult to be a superstar without luck) .... I won't be surprised if Dhoni hits 2-3 6s with 15 or so required v K11 to maintain his cult status

Really?

Must have saved India in dozens of ODI games as a 5/6 down.

Define saved? Firstly yes Dhoni is a odi ATG and has played many innings to get India to a respectable score but in tough chases against big teams it was always Raina, Yuvraj or even the kind of knock Pathan Bros or even DK played.

Show me one knock where India needed 100 in last 9-10 Dhoni scored a blistering 60-70 to take them home?

Dhoni is a better top 3 than a finisher

I just saw highlights of Dhoni’s 140 vs Pak, there was a lot of lunging Involved in the middle overs as well. We started off at 7+ rpo and then Thala and selfless Dravid brought it down to below 6 before Thala turned it again especially against the spinners. Hall mark of a great Top 3

His final hurrah will be years from now.

I think max one more IPl. If I had to bet, he will not last the entire IPL next year, will see a niggle (not hoping for it) because T20 is a fast moving game and as keeper-bat he won’t last an entire tournament.

Kohli has not done himself any favors. In fact a lot of us have already reminisced the “golden days” under Thala sometimes thanks to his idiocy

True man. Without all that pesky emotional baggage life would have been empty.

Nice try :winky: Yuvraj and Raina were important cogs in that Indian team and so was Dhoni. Dhoni played an aggressive innings at 6/7 like Pandya these days and Yuvraj played second fiddle in a match in Pakistan. Like you pointed out Dhoni also scored big hundreds coming in at 3. This is where your POV differs from mine. Scoring big hundreds at the top requires a skill but finishing matches that should be won and 50/50 matches is a different art. Dhoni was earmarked by Chappell and/or Dravid for the finishing role like Bevan. Before his arrival, India will play well upto the finals and lose. They were called perennial bridesmaids. Dhoni was the reason why Yuvraj and raina played with freedom knowing Dhoni will be there at the end.

Dhoni mixed his brute strength with his ability to target certain weaker bowlers made him a world beater. In the meanwhile he will take singles and doubles against the good bowlers to keep within the striking range. Its a pity that the same match winning ability was rendered useless when he couldn't get those singles. This was said by himself in 2016. The beginning of the end of Dhoni had begun and our selectors who are notorious for not being proactive didn't find a replacement ready and ask him to retire. By 2016, he had given up captaincy in LOIs too. So you can't blame him for the failures

Sorry to say but there is no point in discussing this. Now that he has retired we should leave him alone assuming that he will be in the company of relatives or contingent and won't screw us by joining coaching staff.

ICF next target should be Kohli/balloon pant or hahahul.

Isn't it strange that we always need a target. Well it wont be ICF if not for these targets
