Either you are naive or oversmart . When government has to take something back do you think they give clause or in writing. They just silently take it back. The biggest example is LPG gas subsidy. Earlier subsidised cylinders were available then they said subsidy will come in account. Then gas prices reduced to level of subsidised cylinder and they said no need for subsidy . At that time price was 594. Now price has gone upto Rs.825 but still no subsidy is coming. There is no announcement or anything by government regarding increase in price of subsidised cylinder s but on ground subsidy is coming in pennies like 20-30 rs. So silently government killed subsidy. Now at the time of DBT if protests happened that subsidy will not come you would have said the same thing that it's baseless fear but now fear is reality. They do need a gauranteed support price for their crops which is more than input costs. You have free market for farming and next you know they will be forced to dump. Farming is a success story in India and reforms need to be done carefully. Modi is a smart man and needs to come down a little from his high perch to deal with these disenfranchised folks.

The input subsidies are being passed on to the consumers and the output subsidy is going to the farmer. Even then an average farmer is in debt and barely making 5000 pm. And the sticking point is about sustainability and in long term you are correct that it cannot continue on. Focus should be to develop the country so that these farmers can move to industry and work part time on the fields or something. Currently look at it as a mass employment scheme. These laws opens up the market, rich nation subsidizes the growing, doesn’t set a price that farmers sell it, they use subsidies because the global market sets the price. When reforms are needed elsewhere and not so in Punjab, why are they stopping others to benefit? Let them have more controls in their state, as there is a state ministry for Agriculture. Punjab Agro output is growing negatively, while other states diversify. These people sit on MSPs and produce low quality crop which is in surplus for PDS. When government starts buying more from other states, these mandis will also stop. Coops and Wholesale markets are an option going forward
