T20 is a format where batting for stat padding is a recipe for disaster. Our top order's batting approach is fundamentally messed up. They are looking to "safely" secure a respectable score for themselves first before ever thinking of attacking. This

Is happening regardless of the match situation, regardless of who is bowling, and power play is not even a thing for our safe anchors. This is the biggest source of frustration for us fans. In this era we need explosive, 25(12)/30(15) type of batting with anything better treated as a bonus. If our top order switches to this approach and sticks with it for 10-12 games, good results will follow and they will still make a decent amount of runs.

 

A player like Sanju can potentially win you 1-2 games out of 10. It is the job of the rest of the batters to cover the remaining 8 games. The goal should be to build a team of match winners, not a bunch of shackled batsmen looking over their shoulders.  Only if they play as a team that looks to win without having to worry about individual stats, they will succeed. Or else they can tuk tuk their way to fine career averages that are of little value.

Key example of this is England. Morgan has said that they need to keep attacking even if they lose wickets. That's the key to success in t20s. Even in ODIs, Morgan says every batsmen looks for a boundary opportunity in every over to keep their run rate up. He is even willing to get bowled out in the process. Once you have an aggressive team plan and communicate with every teammate, good things happen. So even if the batsmen fails in their efforts to score, Morgan doesn't take him out of the team because said player has shown intent. 50s, 100s and other numbers are just stats. They are meaningless when the team loses.

 Even i feel very strongly .

  " every batsmen looks for a boundary opportunity in every over"  This must be the motto of TM which is to be followed , whoever may be the players , and then just see the difference in approach in a year's time .  Every one will try to make a honest effort else they will not be picked . The stat heroes will be exposed and BS of "taking time"  will be consigned to dustbin.  Each has to play for the goal without the fear of  his place . Plus an advantage is that when you show intent bowlers start guessing and  chances of a loose ball would be more .  Again practice would be very specific & geared towards finding boundaries in each over be it pace or spin or death bowling .  

For eg:

PP Overs - you would be getting lots of good length bowling, back of the lengthin this phase - Training would be done to master shots  coming down the track  to upset length or backing to leg etc.  Result would be shorter length , so be ready for that .

Shorter Length & Bouncer - lots  & lots of practice vs high pace short stuff - Pulls , Hooks , Ramps .

Mid Overs 

Spin bowling -  Upset length of spinners & play shots where no fielder is set . - play and master sweep shots , reverse sweep.

Practice & Practice  - power hitting over the in field, six hitting. 

 

Death Overs - 

3 most common deliveries  in this phase - 

Yorker , Slower balls , wideline full deliveries  mixed with  bumper.

wait on the back foot and expect a slower ball.  Use scoops for yorkers . 

 

England Team  has done these drills so extensively and is very evident in their game ,

- high pace does not bother their openers  while soem movement does .

- they  come down the wicket and hammer the bowing and when dropped short are ready with a pull and always they hit it every time .

- Each & every top player plays sweep, r/sweep and 8 out 10 times connect properly . Each one of them are at ease  in hitting big sixes. unless spinner can deceive him .

- They can score vs yorkers by playing scoops most of the time and they connect their shots mostly.

 

If india has to change the approach -

- Coach needs to be changed , hire one who has implemented this approach .

- Select players who have the raw ability to play attacking shots off pace vs spin or those who have that extra time to play shots .

- Each player would be given these task lists of specific drills to be done throughout the year to master the shots.

- Select different team members apart from core members  for T20 & 50 overs . 

- Test team must be of test specialists only.
