Can KL Rahul have a successful test career as a middle order batsman?

Because palyers improve. They work on their weakness and get better. Noone should get special status but he has earned it. T20 is the real deal and not test kirkit.

How has he earned it. Has he scored tons of runs in FC cricket like VVS did when he was dropped? He has done nothing to show that he has improved. Are you seriously saying  T20 batting is harder than test cricket batting.

Back to back hundreds vs SA just 4 tests back! Was at home but that's okay for someone in the initial stages of his test career. You don't remove your test openers after a couple of failures

And KL was the best batter vz Oz in 2017, much tougher pitches & much much better bowling attack - try again. If MA doesn't score big next innings he should be replaced, ideally Vihari as well.

After that 2017 series Rahul got a full run of 18-20 tests between 2017-2019 - SA, Eng, Aus, WI tours, multiple home series. He lost his spot only after failing for series after series.

 

You want Mayank replaced after failing in 2 tests in some of the toughest batting conditions?

He should play the next game in the middle order. Mayank will inevitably fail in the second innings. So drop him and make Pujara open with Vihari.

That's not true, he was dropped for Vijay & thigh slapper multiple times. Heck IIRC he didn't start as an opener in SA, Eng - Vijay/Dhawan did. His returns were poor & pretty much every opener failed during those tests, even SA/Eng openers failed hard at home. Looking back then that it's clear he did regress from where he was 2 years back (around 2016) in tests though he may have improved upon some of his major flaws from back then. If India is in a position to win this series, then there's zero room for sentimentality. Get players who can do a better job, as simple as that.

Agree on the sentimentality part. But how would you judge Rahul's form, he hasn't played a single FC match in a couple of years.

mayank has failed more then 2 test now 

he failed in NZ and WI also 

 

Avg 20 in WI

25 in Nz 

 

KL has a 100 in Aus and WI, Mayank doesnt .

 

Mayank has played 14 innings overseas and avg 28
