Can we all accept the fact that England came prepared.

Not every loss is because we messed up and not every win is because we played amazingly well.

Cummins, Starc and Hazelwood were still breathing fire but it was our resilience and our bowling that won us Australia.

Similarly England has come prepared. They trashed Srilanka. Root has been in great form and is obviously a great bat.

Even their spinners did really well in Srilanka.

Anderson just picked up a 5fr in Srilanka and still there is Broad to come who will be raring to go and prove a point.

They have come here to win, let’s respect that.

Apart from Kuldeep/ Nadeem debate rest of the team picks itself.

Sure,Kohli is a mediocre captain but can’t take away anything from England. They are in it to win it.

True, in the same vein we were underprepared. After the time in bouncy pitches down under, India didn't seem to have done their homework.

1. Root & the sweep shots - we knew this was going to come, no plan seems to have been made.

2. Indian top order seems to have problems with spin, at least the english use the sweeps to counter it. We still don't seem to have solved this problem & expect for Pant no one else wants to try sweeping.

Also , English batsmen (especially stokes) used sweeps and reverse sweeps to perfection.  All went for boundaries. Our batsmen, on other hand, probably don't know any thing about reverse sweep.  I hv been following indian cricket for about 20 years.  Hardly seen any reverse sweeps by any of our so called great batsmen.

problem is Pant tried that and Sunny G,Akash Chopra,VVS all were saying, that’s not his natural game and he should play straight :laugh1:

Therein lies the problem, our coaching set up loathes unorthodoxy. It doesn't matter those sweeps & reverse sweeps are effective, in their mind it isn't a proper cricketing shot.

You don't need to play fancy sweeps, traditional sweep is good enough most of the time - if executed properly on right balls.

Except Pant no one in our team plays sweeps. It is such an effective shot when played right, it can negate the turn & throw the bowler off his length.

No doubt they were better prepared.   But India could've done a bit more to play to potential.  The dropped catches and no-balls were signs of an unfocused effort.

Some people and teams do well when the chips are down and the situation seems hopeless.  They just find a way with a special determination.  But once they reach the top, they can't seem to handle their success.

Too much emphasis on wins (its share of praises) and losses (its share of abuses). Every year, there are tons of games, a team wins some, a team loses somes. Move on to the next game. Enjoy cricket!

we must provide a decent quality jhaadoo to practice sweep shot to our top order batsmen .

imho we lost because:

1. Toss lost 30%

2. Top order failure 40%  .Played to many scoring shots from the get go in the first innings .Seemed to be management decision aka Kohli. Had we waited 20-30 overs  to up the run rate we would’ve been easier to keep wickets in hand and get close to England score or beyond . We saw how bowlers weren’t getting assistance from wicket in the 1st inn. Also would’ve tired their bowlers. Yes chances would’ve increased of draw but we have 3 more test .

3. bad management of our bowlers from Kohli . Sundar should’ve been given overs with hard ball when Nadeem was going for runs . 15%

4. Nadeem need I say more. 15%

all the pressure on team India now to win 2-1 .

I ll add they have been extremely lucky in this test. Luck favours the brave but that was near perfection from England. They will find it hard to match this performance. They came well prepared last time as well & nearly won the first test in 2016. Like SL this time, it was Bangladesh in 2016 that preceded their India tour. But it took only one defeat to demoralise them. Let's see how they perform in upcoming tests.
