Varun. C was bought in team for his X-factor but dropped due to fitness, whats the point of fitness when we have serial droppers like Kohli, dhawan, iyer, chahal

We have come up with a fake definition of what constitutes a good cricketer. Cricketers are not expected to be athletes. They never were and they do not need to be.

The problem with Indian cricket is that captains today have infinite power. This was not always the case. But now, this is very true. Whether it was Dhoni before or whether it is Kohli now, captains use extensive PR and corporate machinery to make their position and their views as supremely binding on the BCCI. Hence, now we have a situation where Kohli dictates what constitutes a "fit" cricketer, a cricketer who fits in the same mould as him. Just because he likes to stay slim and maintain his abs for social media pictures doesn't mean that he is a "fit" cricketer. In fact, he is a misfit as a fielder because he drops almost half the catches that come his way. He has been a serial dropper over the years and his catching remains poor.

BCCI should use some common sense and actually define what qualifies as a fit cricketer based on cricketing skills needed to succeed, not based on what will help players model for ads or who can run the fastest. No doubt, that once you have "fit cricketers", make them slig to get them to peak physical fitness, but physical fitness alone without requisite cricketing skills is useless in this game.

Valid point on exceptions.

But in cricket different players have different roles. A fast bowler need to be able to run in quick, batsmen need to to run quick between the wickets. The fitness levels needed to achieve these aren't same for a spin bowler who might not be required to bat much, fitness level needed to sustain a T20 game is not the same as whats required for Test match.

Why don't we have a fitness test that matches your role?

Maybe science has not evolved  to that extent I don't know  the answer. But one thing is sure if Chahal can pass that test Varun can pass that also. So there is no excuse for not passing the test. If you want to play for Indian team you better pass that test. I like that they are not making any exception for anyone. This should be non negotiable.

They had that same attitude in hockey and see where that has led Indian hockey.Minimum fitness levels have to be set and each player has to pass that test.If I am not wrong they have multiple options either run a mile under certain time or pass yo-yo test.

Lets calm down . There is not much you are going to gain by exposing your mystery guy to the team  which could be the most potential winner of T20WC .

He has time in hand . Qualifying that with sustained effort not a big deal by June -July  . Important that he stays fit.

This time the new guys  were caught off guard it seems .

Are these fitness rules being applied universally to all the players or do some players have special privileges? I don't think Varun and Tewatia are as bad as Rohit, Pujara and Ashwin on fitness standards. And how is that their franchises picks them for their ability and sees them as upto the required fitness standards but our Captain Clown has a problem with them.

To me it looks more like a case of the captain being unhappy with their selection and hence doing everything to keep them away. Remember he did similar drama before Aus T20s against Rohit.

Most coaches-captains will take a slightly unfit guy (as per random fitness standards) who produces right results over a fit guy with chiselled body but who drops dollies every day.
