They have that committee now, it is led by Kumble. Strauss and other former captains are in that committee. If I am not wrong it was committee led by Mahela that made the reduction in umpire’s call strike zone from 100% ball hitting to 50%. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Bigg Brother Posted March 25, 2021 Posted March 25, 2021 Bumble is actually right about umpire's call.
rollingstoned Posted March 25, 2021 Posted March 25, 2021 (edited) The current umpires call is fine and to a large extent bumble is right, it seems that who ever feels they were hard done by after taking a review and not having the decision overturned make a point about how unfair umpires call is as the ball hitting the stump doesn't change if a whole or a part of it does so. this only reveals their own lack of understanding of the lbw rule and that in that case even the ball pitching outside leg should be given out. The umpire is in a position of authority because he has to predict something that hasn't actually happened. this is a different issue to soft signals where he has to guess if the fielder caught it cleanly 80m away. if anything they could refine it further by asking the umpire whether he gave it not out because of an inside edge or due to impact, etc but it will just muddle the whole process. They have already tweaked umpires call couple of times. If tweaking it further means removing ambiguity then why not do it. But the two different predictions is because there are two different errors rates and probability. We shouldn't remove ambiguity because some people are too dumb to understand that probability means a range of value and not one single value sage 1

Soft signals are considered because unlike lbws and run outs there are no fixed cameras for catches. so there is no guarantee that we will get good camera angles If there are no soft signals then 1) all such catches will 99% be not out with benefit going to batsman 2) host countirs will be accused of manipulating camera footage (when host is fielding you get great footage of catches, when they are batting suddenly unclear camera angles are there, meaning they will always be not out)

I like the old school of thought that the LBW marginal decisions should go in the Batsman's favor. Besides lets not forget the fact that Hawk eye is not foolproof. If the ball is shown as just clipping the bails or brushing the stumps, then it should be Not Out irrespective of the Umpires Call. Currently Technology is considered so that we can reduce the Howlers, if that be so Umpires call also Calls for Consistency..and the only way out for LBW decisions is giving it in the Batsmans favor

express bowling Posted March 25, 2021 Posted March 25, 2021 As the tracking technology is not yet perfect ... 50% + of the ball should hit the stumps or be within the tramline for hitting in line / pitching in line issue. This will solve the issue that Lloyd is raising. Umpire's call in not needed.

You can't have two different decisions for a similar event.
