BacktoCricaddict Posted April 17, 2021 Posted April 17, 2021 (edited) SARS CoV2 B.1.617 is the new India variant. I mentioned it in another thread and others have too, but it needs its own thread. What is it: A new variant with two mutations that enhance infectivity occurring together. Thus, it spreads faster. It is not known if it is more deadly. How did it occur: Millions of variants occur by random changes in the genetic sequence each time the virus replicates. Most of the changes don't make a difference to the virus. Some are detrimental to the virus and die off. Others are beneficial to the virus and stick around. The more the replication, the more the variation. The more the variation, the more the chance that a "bad" one will emerge. Where did it occur: Currently, they think somewhere in Maharashtra. Where is it found: Everywhere now, including Israel, Europe, UK, US. Vaccine effectiveness: Not known. Probably going to be a little, but not significantly, less. How to prevent its spread: Control overall viral replication with vaccinations, distancing, masks, staying home as much as possible. EnterTheVoid Posted April 17, 2021 Posted April 17, 2021 Ah yes, James Reason's "Swiss Cheese Model". A widely used framework to describe risk management. BacktoCricaddict 1
Clarke Posted April 17, 2021 Posted April 17, 2021 Do they call it the India variant yet, like the UK/SA ones ?
BacktoCricaddict Posted April 17, 2021 Author Posted April 17, 2021 Just now, Clarke said: Do they call it the India variant yet, like the UK/SA ones ? Looks like the term "double mutant" is used to describe this one. It's interesting to see how terminology emerges and evolves. randomGuy 1
MechEng Posted April 17, 2021 Posted April 17, 2021 (edited) The Indian mutated variant can attack the brain and causes the person to die, it is a fact (a person I know recently passed away and doctors mentioned the reason). Stay safe and do not take things lightly at all. Edited April 17, 2021 by MechEng

ash Posted April 17, 2021 Posted April 17, 2021 Need of the hour is to find how effective the vaccines are against this variant.

Yes, that's main thing with government just betting on vaccine it looks if there no immunity we are screwed Karnataka chief Minister had first dose of covidshield had covid 7 months before now he tested n in hospital n I know people with first doses done in March in hospital so they check it quick

Does it increase immunity ? That’s the question.

Problem is no one is measuring this here. How many are serious/dead after 1st dose, how many after the second dose. There are many anecdotal stories in social media about people dying even after 2nd dose. Someone has to officially record this and be transparent about the vaccine efficacy, else people will just spread rumours. Indwin and ravishingravi 2

Exactly, if anybody asks me I will say them get vaccinated but I don't like government only talking about vaccination as it's only option they have contain virus now in every possible way and the based research information they can change accordingly and there r need put money on research

Alas this would help only the Keyboard warrior NRIs here who would take Pfizer/Moderna. mRNA vaccine seems to be the least priority of the govt here, citing "cold storage needs funds". Yes it does but shouldn't this be the topmost priority for the govt?

I am also willing to bet that Bharat Biotech scientists are doing the same studies with Covaxin, and AZ scientists are doing with Covishield. The reason I put out Moderna and Pfizer initially is because they've shown to be the quickest to these answers for SA and UK variants. sandeep 1

Yes it does but shouldn't this be the topmost priority for the govt? Would Moderna and Pfizer release those vaccines to India? At this time, manufacturing them unless a facility already exists for them is extremely difficult. I have worked with mRNAs - they are unstable very difficult to stabilize even during manufacturing process. There is no reason why ramping up Covaxin and Covishield would not suffice.

But my point is, it is pretty much confirmed now that mRna vaccines handle the variants better, which Indians may never have access to.
