Moreover show respect to our wrestlers who are gonna lock horns with rest of the world, in a sport more global and competitive than cricket or hockey...that bolded bit makes zero sense over here. Medal based sports aren't BS just because you say so. Are you talking about WWE? No, the one which we will see in Olympics shortly...as an extension include folkstyle, Sambo as well. Global sport, fast growing because of MMA, without wrestling there is no MMA. Literally every champion has wrestling background, grappling has firmly established dominance over striking arts in the last 15 odd years. Tens of thousands of children being put through the grind worldwide......and there are leagues though not as rich as NFL/EPL/IPL/NBA. $$$$$ or league isn't everything otherwise golf will rank higher than many sports and poker>chess. Spend time on YT, use google, you will hear of wrestling WCs, fans celebrating/crying/breaking whatever you want. Without research not wise to pass judgement. Its a nation thats much much smaller than all of those in both size and population (barring Australia), how is it behind than them in sporting achievements? I think only Australia can be considered to have outperformed them, apart from the obvious ones in US and Soviets who have had better manpower and resources than the Brits. Mariyam 1

Uk is active in hockey, a sport that needs plenty of infra and yields at max 2 medals. (Mens and womens). There are also no major private sector participation like football etc to offset any spend. This metric of medals per athele penalises teams who participate in team sports like hockey which are heavy spend ans unsupported by the private sector. For a country like jamaica atheletics programs are much cheaper to sponser than say participanting in hockey. At best it is a very crude metric. In general countries that focus on individual events will have a lower medals to spend ratio. In theory one indian shooter could bring more medals home than the entire hockey fraternity for India. No matter how much you spend on that single person it will be less than the annual budget of hockey Mariyam 1
G_B_ Posted July 11, 2021 Posted July 11, 2021 This is why i keep saying fudge dhyanchand and hockey. It has been a curse on india based on its gazzumping of limited resources. India probably would have been better off if we sucked at hockey as it would force us to focus on more medal getting individual sports. Focus on wrsetling,weight lifting, boxing , shooting and archery. Sports like hockey badminton etc let the private sector do the heavy lifting. I suspect most people in sports admin in india know this. But don't want to upset the hockey is the national sport myth. In an ideal world olympics needs to reflect or give more weightage to team events and events that need more infra. Personally would give both hockey and football 11 medals each in the table based on total players on the pitch. Cause atm you have central asian nations like Georgia focussing in niche individual sports and punching well above their weight.

A side note to Indians: Don't go anywhere near their vicinity as you'll be attacked to vent out their frustration as anyone resembling a "p@ki" is waiting to be smashed and told to go back to their country even if they were born there.
