By now everyone knows that the hurried escape to UAE on the eve of the 5th test was PRIMARILY to meet the UAE quarantine rules to be able to play IPL.  We lost a golden opportunity to win a test series. Chances of closing it the 5th test next year are slim with the return of Ben Stokes and our team being perennial slow starters. 

 

KL Rahul has even admitted to the IPL fatigue being a huge factor in the team's performance. Yes - selection sucked, Kohli is a pathetic captain.  We all know that.  

 

But the honest  and most important question is  - did the team look hungry and driven ?  The answer is a big fat NO.

 

Cricketers are not robots - IPL team owners exert enormous pressure because of the big bucks they have invested.  Do they give a damn that the player may risk participation in a major series/tournament or may need rest before a long upcoming series ? Hell no.

 

The BCCI I believe cannot rest critical players in the middle of the IPL season to keep them fresh - else they will probably be sued by the owners.  All other boards can rest players as they will and the owners can do fcuk all, worst case not pick them up going forward.

 

So how does BCCI ensure that IPL does not compromise results of the national cricket team ?

I reckon t20 WC should be only for young players. Players who are touted as the future. It's a good tournament to judge young hungry players. Our main team shouldn't play unless unless want to take it seriously.

Australia hosts BBL in December and January - the peak of their cricket season and yet none of the test players feature in it. BCCI should model IPL in similar terms where the teams and brands are bigger and not dependent on the superstar players. That is when Indian cricket will start to prosper.

But the answer to your question is no. BCCI cannot do anything now. It crossed the saturation point way back in 2018 when Star got the broadcast rights for big bucks. And the sad thing is that, it's only going to get worse with two additional teams and most probably even more by 2025 where it'll gulp at least 3 months.

Meanwhile BCCI planning to prevent international cricket from intruding into their perfect IPL league. How can they reduce international? Make sure players are rested from all these nonsense series to be fit for IPL

Look the most plausible and logical thing to do is to restrict the number of IPL games that multi-format players feature in, won’t affect brand value so much, and while also give them some much needed break/rest. Also gives more opportunities to uncapped players

Ideally the month leading up to an ICC event should have team boot camps and practice matches, at the same time making sure all the players are fit and fresh. 

 

The 'IPL' problem has been compounded by the recent ICC trophies all being in England ( CT17, WC19, ITC21), which starts in the 1st week of June just after the IPL. 

 

Covid messed up this T20 WC preparations by forcing the IPL to be cramped just before it. If not we would be playing Asia cup in the UAE, which would have definitely helped our chances in the WC.
