NZ has a population of 5.04 million, cricket is not even the national sport.

3 Basketball

4 Football

5 Cricket

 

And of that only 100,000 people play cricket and the actual number of people that play professionals is even smaller.

 

India the country of 1.4 billions people that worships cricket and yet nothing to show for it, nothing to show in cricket, nothing to show in any truly international sports. NZ also wins medals at the Olympics which is quite stunning for a country with a population of only 5.04 million.

Very conveniently missed a lot of points. Sure, NZ is punching above their weight. But, who is holding back India from winning medals and games of cricket? We Indians.

 

How many of us until in the recent past tell our kids to go and play sport (not just cricket) or motivate them to legends from around the world? Hardly few. And then that few don't get much exposure. Yet, somehow we want to win Olympic medals.

 

The culture is changing as Indians learn more about other countries and awareness is spreading among parents (example, recent Olympic Game performance of Team India). But, it will take some more time before India starts winning more medals on par with some of the most sport loving countries in the world. Again, the change resides in us and we need to unlock it.

We have a unhealthy obsession with cricket, and that will never change, we need to introduce different sports to kids very, very early.

 

How can NZ, Australia, etc be so good at sports? It's not because they are rich countries that spend a lot on sports, they do invest in sports but they don't spend that much.

 

They have great facilities that are open to everyone, I know from living in Australia my kids get access to almost every sport and facility, at school they play a variety of sport etc.

That is Indian culture, we want a soft coach who will say yes to the captain.

 

We love to hero worship and bow down to these people, the VIP culture. This is one of the many, many reasons why India will always be **** at sports.

 

We worship those stupid Bollywood movies and their stars like they are going to save the world, we worship politician's that we all know are corrupt to the core.

Even with all of that we managed to reach WTC final, CT final and two semi finals in last 5 years .. I can't say it is a good performance but can't say ** performance  either.

I think this is the best we can do.

Things are changing in India. There is growing awareness about fitness among young people. Parents too are doing their bit to encourage playing sports. Of course, we are not there yet with a culture like you see in Australia, but the change is happening.

There are so many sports in athletics martial arts swimming over represented and sports Indians play are under represented all this number of medals this that makes zero sense. 

 

Besides Australia is like third world of the developed world so if you are living there its only slightly better than India, sorry to say
