Harshal again might turnout to be short time novelty. Hope he is not totally exposed by the time next WC  comes . A change up pacer at 130s pace will be sorted out . No better example than that leftie from Aus who played around 2012-14 .Slow ball exponent not getting his name .

Thanks Expressji. Appreciate.!

Based on the talent we have , TM need to  back the right guys for the right position and make them better than what they are now .

I would be closely watching how the selection goes from here each series . I am OK if India loses some matches  but backs right guys .

If now they go on playing Shreyas in T20 over the above guys that will be stupid judgement on the part of selectors & Dravid .

I have better hope than before in TM (Dravid , Rohit,ASH ) that  they will back up good talent give decent run and create a better env. for fringe player but not so sure the approach will change dramatically so soon.

If we evaluate this T20I series by this TM

Good ..

1. Venkatesh Iyer tried as batting all-rounder

2. Axar at 7 plus bowled really well.

3. Pant given opportunities at 4

Bad ..

1.   3 medium pacers + 0 fast bowlers in 2 matches

2.   Shreyas Iyer batting in the lower middle order

3.  2 conservative openers in Rohit and Rahul. No dashing opener tried in the live games.

BTW . I know you were disappointed by Dipak selection for A - > But i think the reason behind that is to make ready a 4th pacer who should be a swing bowler.

This very specific to fill 4ht pacer for a seaming wicket in SA  and who will be playing in test match rather than grooming for future.

Hence they have sent in Shardul & Deepak. Shardul will be first choice but  not at his best  so Deepak may be sent as cover.

However i  do not  think Deepak will sustain 5 days - either will break down or lose steam quickly.

I know the logic for selection.

Problem is ... whenever a senior bowler is present then the youngsters don't get enough chances. Unless we play 4 seamers there maybe a situation whereby only 1 among Umran, Saini, Arzan and Porel will get to play ... max 2

And in such a case, Umran may not get more than 1 actual game, if that. Saini's attempt at comeback will be hampered too.

That's my worry.

2 Fast bowlers + 4 trundlers is a very bad squad composition for an A team, that too for 4 day matches.

Exactly !

It will work till the novelty lasts.

Shardul, Chahar and now Harshal have all shown we have bowlers who can bat decently. Should be encouraged and used as the examples for the specialist bowlers to work on their batting (like Bumrah and Shami showed in the England series).

Likewise, new batsmen coming into LOI side SKY, Shreyas Iyer, Gill, Shaw, Ruturaj should all be encouraged to spend sometime working on their bowling. The earlier regime's mantra of specialists batsmen and bowlers has to be done away with (which meant over reliance on Pandya who just wasn't up for it). Our LOI bowling with specialist bowlers isn't any special either. Better to take a punt with average seamers with decent skills but those who can bat a bit.

Our batsmen can't bowl and we pick bowlers based on batting too

It should always be 3 best bowlers atleast+ 2 AR.

In LOIs our 'best bowlers' can't bowl either. We have been in the bottom 2 in bowling stats among major test playing nations in last 2-3 years.

We dont pick best 3 bowlers, but someone who can bat as well

I too like the idea of playing 2/3 raw fast bowlers but whether they are really skilled enough for this format or not is something I am not sure.. we dont have the quality that othet teams have hazlewood/starc/cummins or rabada/nortje or archer/wood.. Siraj is yet to prove himself.. Shami is a big flop, Prasidh too hasnt impressed a lot.. we need to see how Avesh performs. If you cant play 3 top quality fast bowlers for this format ( they might be good for other formats though ), better to go with Bumrah and bowling allrounders.

Hardly. Only recently, we faced situations where Pandya had to bowl resulting in a clamour to pick bowlers who could bat a bit.

Siraj has acquired all necessary white ball skills in 2021. Bowling great yorkers, slower balls and bouncers and mixing them well.

Give him 10 matches and he will surely do well

Apart from being fast in white ball cricket, he is a highly skilful bowler and wicket taker.

no otherwise too. In WC 2019, In form Shami was dropped for semis as Bhuvi came back and offered batting(both could have played). We are yet to try Siraj,Avesh,Tyagi but have tried Harshal,Chahar etc.Prasidh was tried in Eng series but is nowhere now.

There should be 4 bowlers in the team who are the best bowlers available for the format.

In tests we can play a bowling allrounder like Shardul at 8 as we have top class bowlers like Jadeja and Ashwin who can bat at No.7.

Jadeja or Axar at No.7 in LOIs can allow us to play ONE among Harshal / Deepak / Shardul.at 8.

The 5th bowler shoud be picked based on batting skills.

Why should bowlers be selected to cover for the ineptitude of the top 8 batsmen !!!!

D.Chahar went at more than 10 runs per over in all 3 T20Is. Did not pick that many wickets either. He failed as a frontline bowler. Picking him for an odd cameo makes no sense to me.

We should NOT look for batting ability beyond No.8 in white ball cricket. 9, 10 and 11 should be the best bowlers.

Harshal and Deepak playing together makes the pace attack too much similar and gentle paced.

I don't think anybody is best bowler in T20. Even Bumrah's stock has fallen these days. Got cartered around in NZ. Didn't  pick up a wicket against Pakistan. HE kept bowling yorkers which was easily negotiated. Who are the best bowlers in T20.  They are all average. If India had not played Chahar they will target whoever we play instead of him or Bhuvi.  Harshal is a big thing now. Not long before he can go for runs in a match.  We can rank the spinners. But sadly besides slightly above average Bumrah everyone looks the same among seamers.

10 matches is too many in T20I cricket as we don't play that many T20Is. You need to grab your opportunities with both hands in the ones you have.

Basically, what you are saying is that we need to develop new fast bowlers with white ball skills.

I think so too.

But the way forward can't be ... giving up on genuine wicket taking bowlers.

Not just T20s but 10 matches of T20Is and ODIs combined.

Every newer player, with genuine potential, needs to be given that time.

also get a feeling that since we have seen the likes of Unadkats Kauls / we perceive these bowling six hitting allrounders also in the same way.. to be honest a deepak chahar contributes in the same way as a Jadeja does ( minus fielding / deepak infact bowls the difficult overs )

But Deepak has been an expensive bowler in international cricket, except his first 2 or 3 T20Is when the novelty factor was there.
