Mumbaikars generally find excuses to keep him in the side.

This picking player from one format to another format is ridiculous thing.

How is sky picked from one to another? He is a seasoned Ranji trophy cricketer. Same for Iyer.

In FC, Vihari has a much higher batting avg (55) compared to both Iyer and SKY.  Vihari should hv been playing ahead of these two.

Vihari has not been playing competitive cricket for a long time  (  as there were no domestic FC matches and A-tours for a long time + he does not play the IPL ).

It is not a bad idea to give him some game time on an A-tour.

Moreover, higher FC averages cannot be the sole consideration for test match selection. The ability to play high pace and bounce as well as good channels balls at sharp pace, have to be gauged. (  Assuming that most Indian batters are decent against spin )

I don't like Iyer's selection based on both these parameters. SKY is better against short balls.

But Vihari is in South Africa.

Vihari is no spring chicken, he's 29 next year. His career has been handled badly.

If he doesn't get to play now then can see him being discarded, however unfairly, for other younger emerging players.

He can continue for a good while yet. Not many miles on him considering he is not playing any other format. Someone like that can carry on until 35.

Almost every batsman continues till 35.

Those who play long continue till 38 to 40.

*those that do not rely heavily on reflexes and hand eye co-ordination like Sehwag.

Vihari and Pujara both belong in this one even if age related decline will undoubtedly be there.

Our first choice test team was announced much before the T20 series started.

Neither Vihari not SKY was there. Vihari was already picked for India A. If Rahul was fit, Vihari wouldn't have played, so, they thought it's better to give him game time in SA than being benched in India. Who knows he might have to replace Rahane or Pujara on SA tour.

Vihari was sent to SA after the senior team selection when the uproar started..He was not there in the first team selected for India A

Still, the argument stands.

There is no argument...You select a backup player only when your main player is not available...Its another thing that Rahul was fit, vihari wouldn't have played, but why did they select Iyer instead of Vihari who was our main backup player all along in previous home series?

Gill ahead of Vihari any day.

Gill's an opener. Why play him in middle when there is MO available.
