Away :-( mostly overseas)

Rahul

Rohit

Gill

Kohli

Rahane (c)

Pant

Washington

Shardul

Shami

Siraj

Bumrah

Rahane is a must overseas and as captain too because that is where his strength lies. Don't rate his batting much anywhere though but then overseas, most of our Indian batters including Pujara struggle.

Overseas: With such a strong batting line-up, india can afford to leave out Jaddu and pick Ashwin.

What has changed? Quite a few wanting Iyer for overseas tests? Wasn't he hated a lot for his weakness vs pace and blamed for getting nod ahead of other talented players.

Also, I am done on Jadeja and Ashwin for overseas tests. Go with four pacers and one spinner who is a very good batsman for overseas conditions. Washington Sundar is my pick for it if he is fit.

Need to strengthen the batting because it has been a worry for overseas. Pant at 6, Washington at 7 and Thakur at 8.

Need to see how Shreyas has improved against rising deliveries at high pace . Has been very poor earlier . Till that is overcome he is not a certainty in X1 in SA.

Choice should be Vihari as he has not been tested properly to dump him right now.  My hunch -Rahane may not make it for SA and Pujara may be included but this could be the last series for him too unless he plays beyond expectations. Choice could be either of  Vihari & Gill to be tested at  #3 & #5 and 2nd in line would be Iyer.

Get a feeling Pujara's reflexes have come down and hence he is getting hit a lot if he is facing 140+ . If my assessment is right then surely this would the  last series for Pujara . He will have to play 140+ stuff most of the time in SA.

Sundar is a top 5 batsman.Bowling is bonus.

I doubt so especially overseas where a lot of our players stats get a hit. Consider him more like Shakib, Moeen type player. Equally good in both roles.

Hence, bat him at 6 or 7 and play him as a lone spinner. Remember Brisbane test.

Jadeja did nothing with bowl in England so better to go with a better batsman at 6 or 7 as it strengthens our batting lineup. We need that overseas because whoever plays at 5 in first test of South Africa ( Rahane, Iyer or vihari), the expectations are lower from them and Pant has disappointed too wherever there is swing or variable bounce. So, better to strengthen our batting more.

Both Ashwin and Jadeja were crucial in Aus. Ashwin should have played in Eng series.

Sundar should replace Rahane.Ashwin can still bat at 7. That would beef up batting without losing on bowling

South African wickets have a bit more spice for pacers than Australian wickets. There will be some swing and variable bounce and those pitches can be assumed as somewhat falls in between the England and Australian pitches.

Given our batting flaws overseas( don't go with these home runs of Ashwin and Jadeja), we must strengthen our batting lineup and still find a way to go with five bowling options. Hence, Washington at 7 and Shardul at 8 is the best choice for me, especially considering the poor returns of Pujara ane Kohli over last three years in test cricket.

if Pujara and Kohli are poor, replace them,no need to sacrifice bowling for that.

Washington is a batsman who bowls.Bats in top order. Bowling will become weak.

Rahul

Rohit

Vihari

Kohli

Sundar

Pant

Ashwin/Jadeja

Thakur

Bumrah

Siraj

Shami/Prasidh

This gives us 5 proper bowlers without losing batting much

Excellent teams. I would replace Kohli at 4 with Iyer overseas, Sundar at 5. And in asia, I'd replace Kohli with Gill (Mayank at 3) and have Shaw in place of KLR. Shaw can butcher pacers in Indian conditions and get settled before spinners enter the scene (which is his bane in India).

Bottom line: No Rat please :)

Your point might have been valid if Sundar was a Labuschagne/Clarke type batsman who bowls a bit. But he is much better bowler than that and has got 6 wickets in Brisbane test.  As long as he is not seen as a 45+ averaging batsman, I don't think he should play in the team as a sixth bowler. He is a good enough fifth bowler in my opinion( also visible by his performance in Brisbane) and overseas let's be fair both Jadeja and Ashwin have their averages under 30 and 25 with bat.

Bowling is not getting compromised here. It is batting which is getting compromised if we play 6 bowlers in tests overseas.

Also, if you drop Pujara and Kohli, then clearly the batting options we have isn't surplus in SENA conditions either as it maybe at home. So, to perform well in SENA, I would definitely want to strengthen my batting and with five bowling options, it is not weakening my bowling attack either. I have got three world class pacers, Shardul Thakur and Washington Sundar. That is more than good enough.

He did bowl well in the 4th test, got Malan(?) out that opened the floodgates that innings! yes more was expected from him but he still delivered in two key areas - bat & field.

Averaged 22 with bat and 45 with bowl.

As Manju says, " Bits and pieces", here we have an example of that.

how did Sundar do with ball in home series v England?

We have enough batting options, just need to back them. Also a top 5 batsmen having ability to bowl is always handy like Sachin/Sehwag

Thakur and Sundar are both support bowlers. That'd put too much pressure on 3 main bowlers.
