Ravindra Jadeja vs Kapil Dev in Tests

Recommended Posts

Kapil played on team where other than Gavaskar none of them avg over 50.Most of the middle order averaged in 30s and early 40s.He did not even have a good spinner to share the load at home in 80s.

Kapil could have done lot more with bat.Can Jadeja score 119 coming to the crease at 31/6 against Allan Donald who was on rampage in SA or score 4 6s with Hirwani at other end and avoid follow on.Kapil also could score against greatest bowling attack of WI.

Stats don't tell the complete story.Kapil as an allrounder is on higher pedestal. Indian teams were looked down upon during Kapil's playing career.

I laugh when morons from Pakistan say Imran Khan was best all rounder of 80s.Imran was a bowler who could bat.,

Jadeja has improved well. Let us not lose sight of the fact Ashwin was averaging 8 points more than Jadeja until 2016. Ashwin 34.92  Jadeja 26.50.  This was the period when Jadeja's three triple century scores in first class was repeatedly brought up. Ashwin was a tailender for his own state. He didn't do justice to expectations for a very long time.

Ashwin stopped progressing as batsmen in last five or 6 years.Jadeja on the other hand has  improved every year as a batsman. He is still improving which is sign of player who is hungry.

After hip strain or something his batting went off the boil. Still he wsa averaging more than Jadeja until the end of 2017. Only in the last few years Jaddu progressed. Ashwin regressed.  Batsmen generally peak at 30. May be it is a case of Jaddu peaking. How long he can sustain the peak is yet to be seen.

Batting at no7 is all about helping team to good total and not about average.Ashwin other than WI was unable to do much with bat at any stage of his career. Ashwin even on his best day cannot bat at number 6.Jadeja on other than can easily bat at number 5 also.

Jadeja always had talent with bat but it just took him longer to realise his potential. You don't score 300 even in practice match by accident. He has scored 3 triple hundreds.

Even in the worst form he was able to help save a Test against Australia. You are trivailizing it was only against West Indies. Most of the time India was in trouble. India could have very well have lost the test. Also against England in England he was the lone warrior in Manchester test when the entire batting collapsed in both the innings. Most recently made a 100 against England.. I still don't rate him as an all rounder by any stretch. But he played some of the tougher under pressure knocks in his career  than Jadeja. Jaddu has 2 centuries so far. He played agianst a lot of rubbish teams too.

In this series he averaged the 2nd for India.

I am not trivailizing anything Ashwin did but Ashwin is not even in the same ball park as Jadeja as a batsman. It is not about average or 100s, it is about the mindset. Jadeja has a mindset of batsman, he can form partnership with higher order batsman by staying at crease. And takeover when he has to bat with tailenders although he can do better batting with tailenders.

Jadeja has played 30 fewer tests and has scored more 50s than Ashwin. We also have to keep in mind Jadeja plays most of the aways tests in tough bowling conditions as a lone spinner. It took him long time to score 100, he will score more 100s.

@putrevusPoint here is Jadeja for the best part of his career could not eclipse a tailender all rounder from his own side. So we cannot compare with him an opening bowling all rounder who has done well with bat and ball in different parts of the world. Also an outstanding fielder and captain with no real support.

That is why even if Jadeja ends up with 40 plus average.he would be not as good as Kapil Dev.

He is supposed to be good. Because he was always considered a genuine batsman who could bowl.  Let us take only the matches they playe together for a period. Upto 2016 both Ashwin and Jadeja played 19 tests together. But Ashwin was a significantly better contributor.  Jadeja eclipsed Ashwin after that. Dhoni even had to send Jadeja after Ashwin because of this. Basically Jadeja was not an all rounder for a while. That is why this comparison with kapil has no merit.
