Wow so many myths busted.  Amazing to see North East contributing heavily as well.  Gorkha recruitment from Sikkim instead of Nepal seems to be on the rise as well.

Proper domination by Himachal.  Punjab is behind the likes of J&K which is a surprise.

there may be a lot of unlikable and/or untrustworthy people in J&K, but I have come across many true patriots there in J&K during my visits there over the decades.

Yeah 90% of the recruitment in J&K occurs in Jammu division alone.  Himachal & J&K both do heavy lifting in Dogra regiment & JK rifles (vikram batra one).  Hardcore patriots.  Numbers of Kashmiris is rising is well but they mostly favor police work from what I have seen.  Either way we see a lot of recruitment drives by IA at valley in news.

Punjab's been on a steady decline as youth is more focused on other things there.  So the age old argument of Punjabis dominating Indian army is now a thing of the past.

Better HDI also plays a role..  Tourism sector booming as ever.  Limited army tradition compared to Maharashtra

Yes, and low HDI doesn't automatically translate to more recruitment in the case of Odisha. Did Kalinga not have a martial tradition ?

Umm..  There's a very long answer to this question.  Shorter ones is IA follows British Indian army concepts.  And revolt of 1857 is mainly responsible for that as well.  Sikhs, Gurkhas, Garhwali, Kumaonis, Coorgi Dogras played a prominent role in suppressing the revolt.

In these cultures, now there is a strong incentive to join the army after 150 years of incentives and they were less likely to be swayed by the political leaders of the freedom movement. Thus Tamils Bengalis and many other dominant ethnic groups of India don’t have a similar military culture.  Case was even more dominant in favor of Punjabis after Independence.

But Slowly with North east chipping in & everything else economically things have evened out a tad.  Some diversification has happened in 75+ years of Independence

Perhaps the coastal states are better represented in the Navy.

At any rate, how is the recruitment rate indicative of the patriotism-ness of a given state?  People can go into the military for a number of reasons - patriotism is one, but the chance at a better life, educational opportunities, and secure futures for children are all valid reasons to enroll in the military.  Secondly, a state is just an administrative unit, arbitrarily carved by politicians and bureaucrats.  If I was in Bihar but now I am in Jharkhand, and Jharkand has a higher rate of military enrollment, I somehow must feel more proud of my state today than I did 30 yrs ago?  Weird.

Yes, would be interesting to note the distribution across other services. I was expecting my state of Jiomart Fortune Pradesh to be the lowest and the Goa number was just gobsmacking.

Slightly older data but latest IAF & Navy numbers seem to get recorded as as per 2011 census.

https://m.tribuneindia.com/news/archive/punjab/from-north-punjab-sends-most-jawans-to-army-865501

Data of the 2011 Census suggests the collective population of Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Delhi, J&K and Chandigarh constitutes just 7.47% of the country’s population.

Yet, as many as 20,483 (15.85%) of the 1.29 lakh IAF airmen belong to the north-western states. Haryana leads the pack with 13,524 men i.e. 10.46% of the country’s total.

In case of the Navy, the north-western states have a share of 19.36% among sailors. As many as 11,258 sailors out of 50,140 in the Navy are from these states. Haryana leads yet again with 6,114 sailors i.e. 10.51% of the total strength.

Very surprised with IAF numbers as I thought it would be more South Indian dominated as number of qualifying exams is too intense.

South Indians still have great presence in IAF though.
