The poster of a documentary film that depicts Hindu goddess Kaali smoking a cigarette has sparked outrage in a sizeable section of social media. Many are calling for the arrest of the filmmaker.

Kaali, the documentary film at the centre of the row, is going viral for all the wrong reasons. Netizens have alleged that the movie’s poster is an insult to the Hindu goddess and hurts religious sentiments.

With Twitterati demanding action against its maker Leena Manimekalai, the hashtag #ArrestLeenaManimekalai began trending on the micro-blogging platform.

The controversy erupted after Leena Manimekalai shared the poster of the film on social media. The poster depicts a woman dressed in the costume of Goddess Kaali. She is seen smoking a cigarette in the photo. Along with her usual accoutrements of trishul (trident), and sickle, the actor playing the goddess is shown wielding the LGBTQ+ community's pride flag. Take a look here:

That filmmaker has been a known Modi baiter and hates her Indic roots

I urge you to report these social media posts hurting religious sensibilities

Wonder what is it with these NRIs who do everything in their power to deny and denigrate their culture.

Additionally, the launch is at Aga Khan museum.

There is often a good amount of symbiosis between the woketards and the minority when it comes to poking the idol worshippers.

There are so many layers to this, none of them flattering to the creator of this poster.  First, it is more than distasteful, it is done with the express intent of offending people.

Second, the timing is terrible - this is a very sensitive time in the whole world - conflicts, everywhere. And especially in India, people are on the edge about religious feelings. Can't one just think a bit about how your actions might provoke anger and violence?

Why can't we put our tribal affiliations aside and stop trying to (a) identify the "other" and (b) go out of the way offend the other ?

She deserves all the backlash she is getting.  Regrettably, she is probably enjoying it too.

They are all exhibiting classic tribal-affiliation behaviors.  Trying to prove that "they" are better than or being victimized by "the other"," their "other" being Hindus.

My view is that agreed that Kaali depiction will not affect my beliefs (classic Hindu philosophy) , but if we don’t voice our opinions, then it will be detrimental to our existence. Ganesha image on flip flops or toilet bowl has to be opposed by those left , can’t be agnostic about it. If we don’t fight, the next option left is to get indoctrinated into popular belief systems Islamic or Christianity
