Post the upcoming T20 WC in Aus, Team Ind could see major changes in its squad. The bowling though looks settled assuming that Ind will have at least 4 pace options in the 11 (unless conditions favor spin):

4 Pacers

Bumrah (specialist)

Moshin (specialist)

Umran (specialist)

SDP (AR)

* D Chahar, Harshal, etc. can compete for specialist slots here

1 main wicket taking spinner

Yuzi or equivalent (specialist)

Support spinner

Hooda

Therefore, in the top 7, there is an opportunity for another spinner or a support spinner. Two key options:

  • Sundar - mainly for bowling, which can work in PP as well. Useful lower middle order batsman (though likely to work better in the top 3-4). Fielding a question mark (in fact can be seen as a big question mark)
  • Tewatia - mainly for unmatched finishing skills. Bring support spin bowling and competitive fielding to the table

There could also be a scenario where both Sundar and Tewatia can (or cannot) be in the 11 ... However, in the above scenario, who would you pick b/w Sundar & Tewatia?

Sundar --> more effective as T20 bowler than Tewy, since the latter's bowling has fallen off quite a bit this IPL reason

Tewy --> less technically correct than Sun, but more explosive

Thus, depending on whether we want bowling-centric or batting-centric AR, they should be chosen. If I have to pick just one, assuming Sundar is fit and playing well, I would choose him. I feel he can improve in batting, and his bowling is solid enough for 5th/6th bowler.

In bowling, Sundar would give you 2-4 overs per game. Tewatia maybe 1-2 and shared with others (Hooda-SDP) ... However, if Tewatia is in good batting form, he is a great asset in the lower middle order and a safe fielder as well

There's more chance of Tewatia improving his bowling to be 5th/6th bowler than Sundar developing hitting power+shots. Tewatia is better in field too.

Sundar should just focus on longer formats, specially Tests

I would go with Tewatia as he can impact games with bat and play at 7. Don't see anyone else who would be suited to that spot barring DK, so that's a good selection to have.

Sundar's problem is not just lack of hitting but in bowling also he is a defensive option and if you use him in powerplay then as defensive option he may not go for runs but the set batsman might look to cash on other bowlers once set.

This is also the reason why I remain unsure about having a defensive option in powerplay like Sundar or Ashwin or any of the defensive pacers. If you want to have a defensive option in bowling department, it should be in death overs only.

For spinners and powerplay bowlers, always look for attacking options.

Sundar's batting is not suited for T20.. He needs to maintain fitness and be picked for Tests and ODIs (at least home series to begin with)

I know this thread is about Sundar vs Tewatia but I wanted to highlight the below assumption:

4 Pacers

Bumrah (specialist)

Moshin (specialist)

Umran (specialist)

SDP (AR)

I like Mohsin but he hasnt been picked in team even to warm the bench..and in the audition so far..Umran failed to impress..I want him to perform well..but seems he is not ready yet..but when Mohsin and Umran are ready..OMG..it looks such a lethal bowling attack..

D Chahar..is questionable due to his fragile body..he is more often out than in..due to injuries or so..

now coming to actual Q regarding Sundar vs Tewatia..well the test match Sundar played in Aus.he did score useful runs with Pant..so seems he can handle those pitches..yet to see how Tewatia plays outside subcontinent..

however he(Sundar) is also susceptible to injuries..like Chahar..I wish Sundar also develops a carrom bowl too..to add more to his bowling..

Tewatia was selected for home series against England, and after that he has not been selected.

Why Axar Patel is always preferred over him. Both Jadeja and Axar  are selected in the squad ,selectors should have selected Tewatia in place of Axar for Windies series

If Tewatia is in good batting in form, he should get the preference. If not, Ind can think of playing Sundar mainly for his bowling.

In the next 2-3 years, Tewatia will be in the higher end of 27-33 years range where cricketers appear to leverage on their experience too to open up new dimensions of their game and display a relatively better understanding of cricket (after having learned from failures too). This 2-3 year period also allows Sundar to improve his game further (batting-bowling-fielding) and be ready when the opportunity calls.

Tewatia is hardly a bowler at this point, and bowls "legspin" or tries to.   Sundar's offspin offers a complementary variety to Chahal or any other leggie we pick as the primary spinner.  Besides his bowling is proven in T20.  Yes he's not delivered big hits in T20 with the bat, but I think his talent and potential is worth investing in.
