Batting unit looks locked for 2023 ODI Wc , infact 13-14 members already looks locked

Recommended Posts

  1. Rohit
  2. Dhawan
  3. Kohli
  4. Pant
  5. KL
  6. Hardik
  7. Jadeja
  8. Chahal
  9. Shami
  10. Bumrah
  11. Siraj
  12. Shubhman Gill (backup opener)
  13. Shreyas iyer (backup middle order)
  14. Axar (backup all rounder)
  15. Backup spinner - most likely will be Kuldeep
  16. Backup pacer- Prasidh vs Chahar vs Thakur vs Bhuvi vs Arshdeep vs Anyone (if bhuvi keeps his fitness n form up he ll win this race)

As far as backup keeper is concerned, they wont have him in squad since Wc is in India and they can call for it anytime. Even if a situation occurs on morning of the match KL can keep wkts.

In Rohit-Dravid era, squad seems to be locked a year prior whereas in Kohli-shastri it was a mess till 2019 semi final .Not only that players to have their role well defined now . Pant has been backed big time at 4 for quite a while now and return of Siraj can be another big positive

The squad for world cups is always 15, there are usually standby players to cover injury.

I believe 13 are locked in:

1) Rohit

2) Dhawan

3) Kohli

4) Pant

5) KL

6) Pandya

7) Jadeja

8) A Patel

9) Bumrah

10) Shami

11) Y Chahal

12) Gill

13) S Iyer

14) K Yadav/R Ashwin/W Sundar/R Bishnoi

15) B Kumar/D Chahar/S Thakur/Siraj/Prasidh

Yup, most options look sorted. A case for Deepak Hooda as well as a backup of Pandya that can give off spin option although not sure how they will include him if it is a 16 man squad. It might be 15+ 3 reserves.

A case of deepak hooda need performances to make his case, not only that he needs a spot. I dnt see any spot for him

I get the feeling that Dravid is looking for a young opener. He isn't comfortable with the 3 oldies at the top.  (  We have seen him correctly sideline Rahane, Ishant and Saha )

And Gill has responded well.

He may replace Dhawan if he keeps performing.

And if Kohli keeps failing for 14 more months, who knows what may happen.  He maybe told by the BCCI to niggle himself out of the Cup.

With more than 14 months left, a lot may happen.

1. I  see Gill as one of the 3 openers  unless he flops badly in next 1 year. But gut feeling he will do well going forward and clinch his spot if he becomes permanent member in X1 till WC .

2. I feel a leftie pacer in form may make it in XV. Have hopes on Arshdeep if keeps improving . main plus his death bowling , his use of swing with new ball will decide his fate  mostly .

3. Shami & Shardul - not sure of form & fitness by then . esp. Shardul - does not look the shardul of  2020-21 .

4. They are over using Yuzi. They should zero in on a new Leggie or mystery spinner . Need to give chances to others  Kuldip/Bishnoi etc,

Getting an eerie feeling that rivals teams esp. ENG , SA , may be Aus  have devised a plan against Yuzi &  tundle medium pacers  (shardul, Bhuvi ) and unleash it in world cups.

The way Dussen & markram played  Chahal & later spells of Bhuvi & Shardul a match recently may be the trial run they did. Dussen standing way too down the wicket to counter all those knuckles, slower ones and making bowlers to bowl bit short and hammering over the onside and straight down. We may see new tactics on KO matches in WC and not before  perhaps .

shardul neways always scare me as bowler in Indian condition even when at his best . His bowling wud max suit grounds like Namo stadium

If it comes down to having depth in tail, ill rather have hardik do 3rd seamer job and play someone like Ashwin

Lol at Kohli getting locked...  If he does poorly in WT20 he will be shown the door.

Dhawan lot will depend...  WC 2023 is still far far away.  In October 2023 I guess..  I suspect Dhawan will get dropped after NZ tour in December or in BD.

All three Gill Iyer Hooda are very much in this.  They are getting these games coz Dravid knows he needs a solid contingency plan.
