Number Posted December 14, 2022 Posted December 14, 2022 Problem with Pujara is he bats like Ishant Sharma even after playing 100 balls. Kohli will comfortably outscore Pujara's 3 good innings in 1 good innings. nevada, Majestic and Vilander 3
Clarke Posted December 14, 2022 Posted December 14, 2022 IIRC Kohli sucked against Aus in the 2017 BG trophy and this could be no diff on dry turning tracks.
Sandeep99 Posted December 14, 2022 Posted December 14, 2022 Is that still a question? Brat is an LOI player. Pujara has 2 series winning performances in Australia and countless such performances in India.

I don't remember anything match winning from him in 3 years away, Pujara at least has some credit in Oz & to a lesser extent Eng as well.
Majestic Posted December 14, 2022 Posted December 14, 2022 In Asia, yes! Overall, No. You cannot be better than another batsman who averages 45 outside Asia by producing output of 32 average at strike rate of 37 outside Asia.
Lone Wolf Posted December 14, 2022 Posted December 14, 2022 Nurul dropped a dolly off him.... This knock will hurt India big time... Gujara is beyond finished... At least Pakistani moved on with Azhar Ali

Kohli's best series away was on the highways of Oz in 2014/15 where even Rahane almost matched him! Remember 2014 Eng where BRat couldn't buy a run? Or Eng last year, NZ 2019 & arguably 2012 Oz as well? If you give extra points to Kohli for 2018 Eng tour, then Pujara should get 2x bonus points for his performances in Oz 2018 & 2021 - also batting at 3 is much harder away, conversely it's much easier at home so there's that. Won't really debate on Pujara vs Kohli as I have negligible interest towards both but there is no doubt that Kohli has played far more memorable knocks and has been far more consistent than Pujara outside Asia has been in their careers. Overall, Kohli leaves Pujara in dust as far as test batting is concerned.
R!TTER Posted December 14, 2022 Author Posted December 14, 2022 (edited) You could argue that he is the overall better batter, just looking at their numbers, but leave Pujara in the dust again on what basis? Here's the list of major series where Pujara left Kohli in the dust - 2012 Eng at home 2013 Oz at home 2016 NZ at home 2017 Oz at home 2018/19 Oz away (debatable) Then 2021 Oz away(Kohli didn't play the full series, but his replacements actually did better you could argue) Do you have any such presentable numbers for Kohli? I don't consider his massive FTB streak against SA in 2019 or at home in 2017 as those were easy games! Edited December 14, 2022 by R!TTER
vvvslaxman Posted December 14, 2022 Posted December 14, 2022 (edited) Both are crap nowadays. We should compare with other domestic players. Not each other anymore. I do think there are better than players than Pujara, Kohli, KL Rahul in domestic easily. Jaiswal, Sarfraz, patidar are better than these 3. Edited December 14, 2022 by vvvslaxman
zen Posted December 14, 2022 Posted December 14, 2022 Pujara has won India its first series in Aus (after decades in of attempts) … That alone makes him super special. Another special batsman is Sehwag but for different reasons. Give me these two over any Indian test batsman, except maybe Gavaskar!
Adamant Posted December 14, 2022 Posted December 14, 2022 I agree that he has been more impactful in Asian conditions but he has failed too many times away from home. So definitely not better than Kohli.

Majestic Posted December 14, 2022 Posted December 14, 2022 For India, overseas performance will always play an important role in judging a batsman's calibre in Test cricket. The kind of cricket India plays at home is only replicated by Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. The pitches are either flat or spin friendly. The other powerhouses of cricket don't have that many great spinners so they will never be able to challenge Indian batsman at home. Fast bowlers are mostly reduced to sidekicks in these conditions. Hence, weightage will always be higher to overseas performance when it comes to Indian batting performance unless we are talking about a freak batsman like Sehwag or Pant. Considering that, the top 10 Indian batsman since 1970 will be : 1. Sunil Gavaskar 2. Sachin Tendulkar 3. Rahul Dravid 4. Virat Kohli/Virender Sehwag 5. Virender Sehwag/Virat Kohli 6. VVS Laxman 7. Mohinder Amarnath 8. Gundappa Vishwanath 9. Mohammad Azharuddin 10. Dilip Vengsarkar Pujara is probably no.11 because he needs spinners to score runs overseas. If you play with 4 pacers and a de grandhomme level all rounder, he will struggle to buy even a run like WTC Final or NZ tours as reference.
Majestic Posted December 14, 2022 Posted December 14, 2022 Cheteshwar Pujara in WTC Final, for reference: 1st inning : 8(54) SR 14 2nd inning : 15(80) SR 18 Disclaimer:- I am no Kohli fan so if you feel like I am bashing Pujara because he got compared with Kohli in this thread then feel free to bash Kohli also vvvslaxman 1

We already saw that in A game against Bangladesh. Everyone was scoring at 60,70 strike rate. This guy scored a 50 at a strike rate of 41. Pant and later Iyer took on the tougher phase of the game by scoring quicker than him.
