Blanket aversion to enforcing the follow on

This test is a classic example of how one shouldn't blindly follow the trend. This pitch has a history getting better and better as match goes one. Shouldn't India have enforced the follow on if that were to be the case? With a mammoth lead India might as well have bowled them out with so much pressure.

Most teams in International Cricket dont enforce the follow on these days . Everyone prefers to bat after taking a big lead. Think the only time teams would enforce follow on in the future is when they are running out to time and can't afford to bat again.

Yea but should we follow the trend blindly. Now that India has already bowled over 100 overs in 4th innings. They didn't exactly get break or anything between two innings. Just 2 session break. That's it. They have been bowling on day 2, day 3, day 4 will bowl on day 5 as well.

Bangla has played 102 overs so far.  Abe Aus maar maar ke bamboo de dega with this KL approach.

Kuldeep should have bowled more overs than the drama queen Ashwin. Toothless bowling by him.

Not really, we also need to be able to practice bowling teams out quickly when the pitch has slowed down. Admittedly this works only when we have the runs on the board to defend but in the last few years our 4th innings bowling has really gone down! Ranchi 2017, Delhi 2017, Sydney 2019, Kanpur 2021, SA tour in 2021 & Eng earlier this year! I don't know if it's just the pitches or batting worldwide in general that fears of high 4th innings chases has waned, but our bowling has not really been that great at the end

I think it is not just us that struggle. Australia struggled against us at the Gabba, SCG. NZ struggled against England big time. 4th innings fear has gone down. Even Pakistan gave England a scare.

Meh. Bangla would have played well in second innings anyway. Atleast now batsmen got practice and bowlers got 2 session rest 

 

Follow on is a desperate measure to force result. This match doesn't require it

Exactly. They are two bowlers down.  Possibly Tamilnadu would score 150 in 10 overs in current form against this side.

no, we can't score 150. look at how we played herath and co in SL - and that was a much better batting lineup

What’s your point ? Objective was to win which they will. You want to criticise team then do so on our bowling approach. Being critical for not enforcing follow on makes no sense.

It has been 21 years since THE  Kolkata match. Since then, bowler longevity is at greater risk due to increased formats and club cricket.   Bowlers' exhaustion levels need to be taken into consideration for deciding follow on. If the opposition gets bundled out in just 25-30 overs go for it but if they have batted an entire day,  don't.
