Is Arshdeep overrated?

He seems to regularly bowl noballs and then gets hit for sixes. He doesn't have the pace of course and also doesn't seem to have any weapons like a good short ball. In swinging conditions, he looks decent in the first few overs, but we have other good swing and seam bowlers like Chahar and Bhuvi. As a T20 specialist bowler, he appears inadequate to me and not consistent.

The only part he is consistent with is overstepping. At this level, this should be unacceptable. After the disaster he has with the last game, at least he should have rectified that part. But, alas, he didn't even do that.

was easily our best bowler in WT20.

Still young and time to learn. He's suddenly the senior pacer here and doesnt seem to handle it well so far.

No ball problem is an issue but it can't be rectified so easily else no one will bowl no ball.

He had a great start to his intl career, was easily the best T20 bowler for last year or so, but suddenly losing plot. Must agree that he cost us the game today. This match will define him and shape his future. If he bounces back from this, he will be a force else will fade away in no time.

Those were very different conditions that helped him overcome his lack of pace and bounce.  Same conditions that made Mohit Sharma be effective for India in 2015 WC - up to a point.

Its 2023, India has better alternatives available.

He has skills. But how to use them effectively, is something he has to learn. Right now he has serious execution problems.

that comes from experience. I wonder if bowling coach is working on his issues.

Was also good in WI (next WT20 venue),Asia Cup and home series v SA.

Other options are either injured or not selected for whatever reasons.

The alternative in squad is Mukesh Kumar who hasn't even played IPL.

He has to have a lot of overs under his belt. He looked good in the world T20 with banana swing. He reduced SA to 8/5.  So he has something going for him. But everytime after a break he looks listless.

He did play Ranjis AFAIK.

More of a mental thing imo. There is no senior bowler he can look upto now.

Skills without execution is like an Umbrella without its roof.

True. But he has already owned some world class batsman in his first spell something Bhuvi couldn't do oflate.  QDK, russow, Babar, Rizwan against in Trivandrum he ran through SA.  T20 format can be unforgiving given the nature of the format. Batsman will come after every bowler.  Bumrah himself got cartered around in the few matches he played in between.  Think about an inexperienced rookie like him.  I want him to play a lot of domestic matches. Domestic mean actual first class matches not T20 where you bowl 2 overs spells of 2.  Once he plays there he will learn to control his deliveries. He is still a potential.

There are plenty of alternatives, if we are talking WT20.  Siraj, Shami, Boom, Prasidh.

None of these are left-armers, and with Mohsin and Nattu injured, Arshdeep is getting a few games and rightly so.  But he's fast working himself out of contention.

Siraj is not a T20 option as of now. Shami has also been underwhelming throughout his T20I career (also old and too important for other formats)

Bumrah and Prasidh are injured, among others.

He's getting rope due to performances till WT20. Its running thin now I agree but still need to see if he can reverse it.

Even today he bowled 3 good overs including the 18th. So can seek confidence from that.
