Former Tamil Nadu player Sunil Subramaniam, who was India’s manager and a part of Ravi Shastri’s think-tank in the 2018 series, said, five years ago it was a different situation. Rahul was a youngster and needed backing. "You should realize that Rahul, at that stage, was a youngster...but now it’s significantly different," he told The Times of India.

It's not like India did not have options at that time but they were perhaps not of the quality of Shubman Gill, Mayank Agarwal and Prithvi Shaw. Murali Vijay had just been replaced by Rahul himself and Shikhar Dhawan's Test career was also witnessing a downward curve. There were no immediate replacements in the domestic circuit. Gill and Shaw were too young and Agarwal hadn't quite set the Ranji Trophy alight.

"There are players like Shubhman who are just not knocking, but banging on the door. And then there’s Prithvi Shaw as well. How long can you ignore legitimate claims?” he asked.

If Rahul is serious about his career, he should go on and country cricket in England. If public anger increases, he might as well be removed from IPL captaincy. He needs to focus on his batting.

This entire generation of Indian cricketers are lucky. They all have a good backup in the form of IPL. Rahul can't bat in this era. Imagine him facing the heat and skill of the 80's and 90's..

Exactly. Not a chance he would have survived so long in any other era since at least 40 years. Vinod Kambli just had one bad series and he was out.

Lol bowling is much much better and way harder to face now. Players are much superior. 

 

Past eras are a joke pre 2010. So many no ball wickets. Unlimited bouncer rule. No drs. No 3rd umpire. 

 

Every team has quality fast bowlers barring a couple.

Bowlers are unlucky breed in this era.  Horses for courses apply only to bowlers. Not batsmen.  Umesh Yadav is one of the best bowler  in Indian conditions.H He had to sit out. Rahane most of the time sucked in India. Yet he never had to face horses for courses policy.  It is applicable only for bowlers.

kambli was far better than kela. on current form, most of our batters at home would not stack up against kambli vs spin

In Asia umesh is deadly. Shits on Cummins shaheen and rabada etc.

tracks are not as flat as westerners think. plenty of scope to use reverse swing and even conventional swing + short balls effectively. andie has done well in SC past few years, for example, having learnt from his previous experiences

Exactly. You need skill plus either pace or bounce to be effective in India. 

 

Short ball works. It's just hard to hit the surface because it's taxing on the body. Westerners just don't want to work hard. 

 

Mcgrath once said his favourite place to bowl was actually india. India wickets are perfect of you have one of either reverse swing plus pace ability or bounce plus unerring accuracy. 

 

Sometimes those rough patches can help quicks too as ball movement is unpredictable.

gill not playing is the bigger travesty. in tests, sarfaraz has a much stronger case than shaw.
