I am a big advocate of players able to make an earning by playing as many leagues as possible. However, let's be honest, most (not all) international players are picked by leagues when they get TV exposure. What's the likelihood of TV exposure for a cricket player? By playing for the national team. If the national team isn't being featured on TV on a consistent basis, who will want to buy these guys for their franchise? Guys like Russell, Narine, Holder, Bravo, Gayle, etc are household names. But how many of the new guys playing for WI do you know by name honestly? I am sure many are as talented as the latter but being a no-name isn't going to give you a contract with leagues around the world.
