If Rinku bats at number 6, where will Pandya bat? Sorry he is not good enough to bat in top 5.He might want to bat in top 5 but he simply is not good enough to bat there.

Let us say Pandya bats at number 5, Rinku number 6.

You want Rahul/Wk to bat at number 4?

Batting becomes very weak.

Pandya has to decide if he desires to become Ben Stokes or Chris Woakes. If he bats at 7, he has to compulsorily bowl 6-8 overs in ODI and 3-4 overs in T20 minimum.

If he bats at 5, then he has to be a responsible batter who can contribute 1-2 overs in T20 and 3-5 in ODI.

If can't decide, send him out and develop Raj Bawa as the next gen allrounder.

What I understand so far, he is better bowler than a batter. But he is trying to become a batter first.

A fit D chahar would have been ideal in place of Thakur. Can handle the new ball leaving Bumrah for the back end and is a better batsman who has played clutch knocks for India in ODIs

I think the Asia cup squad selection has had a lot of thought process going into it.. Kudos to the new selection committee.

Here is how I see it.

Confirmed spots:

1. Rohit

2. Gill

3. Kohli

4.

5.

6. Hardik

7. Jadeja

8.

9.

10. Shami

11. Bumrah

#4 -> First choice is Iyer. If he is match fit, then he takes the spot. No debate..

If Iyer is not match fit/ deemed not ready for the WC, then this spot goes to either SKY or Tilak... Both of them are in the Asia cup squad.

#5 -> If Rahul is fit enough to keep for 50 overs and bat, then he takes this spot.. Hence why he is in the Asia cup squad to see if he is match ready.. If he is half fit or gets a niggle, he is Out, and Samson comes into the squad and takes the spot as the first choice keeper.

#8 -> Either Thakur or Axar take this spot depending on conditions.. 5th bowler who can contribute with the bat, so we don't play with 4 tailenders. Ideally, I would have liked R Ashwin here instead of Axar given that the WC is happening in India, and Ashwin brings a new dimension of right-arm off-spin while Axar is redundant with Jadeja in the XI

#9 -> This is either Kuldeep or Siraj depending on conditions.

In addition to all of this, Kishan is a back up opener and back up keeper. Prasidh is there as a back up to Shami / Siraj / Bumrah in case one of them picks up a niggle. He will likely travel with the WC squad as a net bowler, but will not make the 15-member squad.

That's your full 18-member squad for the Asia cup (18 including Samson).`

It seems to be well-thought out IMO.

Pandya can become neither Stokes nor can become Woakes. He is not good enough in either batting or bowling. It will be foolish to expect Pandya to become some more than being bits and pieces player he really ever was all this time.

That is why all we see from Pandya is false bravado to conceal his lack of talent.Let him play IPL and leave Indian team alone.

India has been hamstrung enough by these bits and pieces players like Pandya, DK.But for this world cup they have no other alternative. They need to start looking for better options as soon as world cup is over.

There we will lose the game, Kuldeep is a must in the XI, no questions asked.

Siraj and Shami are in knockout, Siraj brings in swing and aggression..Shami brings in seam and control..both are almost as quick with Siraj marginally faster. Bumrah is another must.

Siraj should be the confirmed one and not Shami.

I think the TM trusts Shami more than Siraj.. Either way, one of them is guaranteed a spot, and the other is an option based on conditions

Based on current ability, Siraj is obviously a better bowler and a genuine wicket taker.  He is likely to play ahead of Shami.  Only thing in favour of Shami is that he is a better batsman than siraj. So, there is still a 20% chance of shami being preferred (IMO)

This is how it will be most likely, even for the WC : -

Rohit

Gill

Kohli

Iyer

Rahul / Ishan

Jadeja / Pandya

Pandya / Jadeja

Shami

Bumrah

Kuldeep

Siraj

Axar will be replacement for Jadeja

Shardul will be replacement for VC , may be or Jadeja in some games where spin has little part to play

I don't understand why anyone(including experts on cricinfo etc.) thinks that Shami is a sure starter in the XI. He isn't. Siraj has outbowled everyone else and is the first name in the bowling attack. He is the only bowler almost guaranteed to take wickets with the new ball.

I am beyond shocked...  Shows the general cricketing IQ of eggsperts & the fans in this country.

He is highest ranked Indian pacer & after a loooooong while someone averaging in 20's.

Shami would be carted around at the death.  Siraj is superior new ball & death option with more pace.

Rohit & Dravid would be jokers if they don't play him vs Pak on 2nd.

Similarly, I was shocked hearing some youtube eggsperts saying Dhawan is unfairly dropped and Bhuvaneshwar too has been unfairly treated and both of them should have been in the 17 member squad. Looks like they follow Cricket only in WCs.

Most of the casual Indian fans have no clue what they're talking about. They just give out crap opinions just for the sake of it. Some of them are even saying that we should go with DK as an eggsperienced wicket keeper/phinisher option for the world cup.

No matter what, guys like Dhawan, Bhuvi, Chahal , DK and Ashwin will always remain on the tongues until they retire. People just want to see familiar names selected over and over again for no apparent reason.

Hahahah DK.. This is heights. Everyone saw how he choked in T20 world cup in every game. Still..

Although not as ridiculous but even Ashwin's name bothers me. Was never a very good ODI bowler, hasn't played in this format since ages. Even his fielding is very poor.

Ashwin, Jadeja both should have been permanently sidelined from white ball cricket around 2016, no doubting their greatness in tests but the era of conventional finger spin has been over in shorter formats for more than half a decade. Alas our people have no vision.

Because they don't watch cricket ,people don't have time to follow cricket

All they do is ,watch some arseful cricket discussions featuring Vikrant Gupta types and believe Chahal ,Boobies ,Shami of old are Indian legends and thereby have full rights over spots in the side

We discuss here ,so we go through thick and thins of Indian cricket and know the nerves very well else we too would have been gaadu types talking shyte, still there are some

Who have gone into perma holes after all their hyperbolic terms "all phase bowler, match ups" etc fell like rotten eggs on their faces

Well said.

Most of them just do not follow the team that closely but give out two rupees ka gyaan everywhere on social media.

Some of our leeches should thank Ambani lol. Free/cheap internet has really prolonged the careers of some oldies thanks to the chewtiya aam indian cricket fan whose mindset is still stuck in Dhoni era.

Prior to 2015 WC we played a Tri series in Aus, despite some early wickets from pacers, Jaddu and Ash could not put any pressure on Steve Smith in middle overs.

He kept owning us the whole summer and in the end same story repeated in WC SF. Same thing in 2016 ODI series we played there, our batsmen will score 300+ and Aussies would just sleepwalk to that total.

It was painful to watch Jaddu and Ashwin being toyed by then newbie Fakhar Zaman In CT17. Ended Ash's ODI career.

This is why it's important to select based on performances against top 6 sides and for specific conditions.

Specialist spin in LOIs is overrated. England only pick one specialist spinner - Adil Rashid in any squad.
