Axar Patel - Shardul Thakur - Washington Sundar - Vijay Shankar?

Ps - I excluded Deepak Chahar from the list since he's not in the running for the World Cup spot. I hope they consider Vijay Shankar as a choice, given his decent performances in the last 2019 WC and recent IPL.

As a no. 8 batsman, Bhuvi was handy with the bat till 2019 WC.  There were many such knocks.   After that, his batting regressed significantly.  In 2021, he was involved in a similar partnership with D Chahar for the 8th wicket and we won that 2nd Odi vs SL.  But that credit mainly goes to Chahar.

2 are spin AR and the other 2 are pace AR.  Who should be preferred (or not) depends on the type of pitch and also the strenghts/weakness of the opponent.

If we strictly talk about match winning  MSD/Kumar are right up there

No. 8 is overrated. Selecting mediocre bowlers who can score maybe 15 runs is not a good idea.  They'll concede more than they score. 

 

Just select your 4 best bowlers and have them work with a power hitting coach. 

 

 

Washington has the talent to be a batting allrounder to bat in the top 6 but our joke system will not develop him because they are dumb.

Going by recent form

Axar is your steady operator with ball, he won't pick truckloads of wickets (unless pitch favours him heavily) and at best a controlling option. Sundar is same with ball.

With bat Axar > Sundar at no 8.

 

Thakur is unpredictable, on his day he will make 40(22) and pickup 2-3 wickets..else he will make 0 (3) and will leak runs at rate of 9/10 per over.

 

Vijay Shankar has no upside while batting at 8, he is not a power hitter and his bowling on good days is a 4 or 5 level bowler.

 

Axar >Sundar > Shardul > VS (on recent form)

 

Sundar > Axar > Shardul > VS (on pure potential, as Sundar is someone who can become a genuine batter).

batting wise he can bat pace and spin well . Can hit well . Best temperament 

 

bowling - can be v good in power plays . 
 

axar imo is a lesser batsman but slightly better bowler at the moment 

 

I would pick sundar if opposition has more than 3 left handers in top 8

No.8 will be Kuldeep who can stick around in ODI.     First 6 players should be genuine bastmen. One or two should be able to bowl. 7 and 8 should be all rounder. Last 3 can be anything.

I feel like 9, 10, 11 should be genuine regardless of their batting ability.

Shami is not a dud like  Mukesh with bat while being good with bowling.

Washington Sundar who is also a no 8,on some days, can be used as floater.

None, just play Shami at 8 (along with Bumrah and Siraj as pacers). Will bring more value than a bits and pieces no. 8

Play a proper batsman up the order.

Thakur is a perfectly fine selection

 

He will do well in the world cup. 

 

Siraj, Bumrah, Pandya(has improved as a bowler) + Thakur is a good bowling attack.
