Like Don, Dhyan Chand too was a statistical outlier, even today people (including goras) omit him out of respect when rating hockey players......because number 1 spot is undisputed, like it is for Bradman. 3 Olympic gold medals and could have won more, but hockey wasn't featured in 1924 Paris....and no Olympics in 1940 and 1944 due to WW 2. 

 

In absolute terms there have been better batsmen than Don, better hockey players than Dhyan. But compared to peers nobody maintained as big a gap between 1 and 2......Viv and Greg Chappell comparable, Sachin and Lara comparable, Kohli/ABDV/Smith, Shahbaz Ahmed/Hassan Sardar, de Nooijer/Jamie Dwyer.

Agree - the number of legendary Australian athletes are too many to name. 

 

I think Ian Thorpe and Cathy Freeman were probably the only major athletes who were feted quite a bit.

Cos of 2000 Sydney Olympics.

 

They were the face, also being an aboriginal woman helped Cathy Freeman, that Olympics placed lot of emphasis on honoring Aus indigenous people, that was also a pitch when they bid. Sally Pearson today is a more decorated athlete but hardly ever talked about.

 

Ian Thorpe is a gay icon, so he gets lot of coverage. 

 

Aussie sports culture is next level. Pound for pound the greatest sporting country, so many icons.

Is that an indictment of the overall lack of quality in their eras?

 

If there are players who are better in absolute terms, I would rank them higher because maintaining a gap may just be a function of how good or bad the others were at the same time.

As the saying goes, champion in one era will be champion in another. These guys were pioneers, I am sure they would have adapted their games in the modern era to rule their sports. 

 

If you look at the bats Bradman played with, how he practiced with golf clubs, the legends about Dhyan Chand playing with umbrella handle or practicing his dribbling skills with raw eggs, these were superhumans. Paul Morphy was a similar legend but in chess, you may find his story interesting.

Dhyan Chand is indubitably No. 1, the Bradman of his time. And Balbir Singh Sr was arguably as great a player in clutch matches. Our hockey riches can leave all other Ind sportspeople in the dust - despite isolated (i.e., one-off) legends like Vishy Anand, Neeraj, etc
