I am still in shock when I think of it. I never understood what happened. Like how can someone be so clueless. It's like you just dint want to win?? They could have walloped Pakistan in the final. Those mental midgets would choke easily. I dont get it. Was it fixed? Cronje fixed many games iirc Majestic 1

They'll need to revamp the team as some of the players (DeKock, Miller) won't be around for the next tourney, and they'll need to rethink their team composition. They learned the hard way, just like us from earlier losses, that 5 specialist bowlers and a long tail is not the way to go in a tourney. But at least they made progress by dropping that quota pick Bavuma. Edited July 3, 2024 by Ultimate_Game

Watch out for David Bedingham as well. Quality in making. In next 2-3 seasons of SA20 when there is actual money in the coffers of CSA and their system you will see results. They could leave Poms in the dust in coming 5-6 years. Would be top contenders for home 2027 ODI WC Talent alone doesn’t win you cups. SA in 1999 has cronje, Gibbs, Cullinan, pollack, Kallis, Klusener, Allan Donald. This is the best squad they had and they were wining but chocked bad. They had 3 proper all rounders and still couldn’t win. The one who can hold nerve and doesn’t choke is going to win. There was no luck that was involved. Kron and Ultimate_Game 2

That was the first time I had access to the 1999 cricket world cup game right after the world cup final lol. Was actually fun back then. Wonder how games are these days. Barely play anything unless my daughter wants me to for fun.

Pressure make one do funny things. That last over and the runout was so bizarre! They needed 9 runs to win off the last over. The first two deliveries were hit for a 4 and they only needed 1 run off 4 deliveries with Klusener on strike! And the bowler was Damien Fleming, not someone like McGrath. The way they lost their heads and ran like headless chicken defies logic. They still had 2 more deliveries left but the way they ran it looked like it was the last ball of the innings. Despite a mixup the previous delivery Klusener and Donald didn't get together and agree that they'll only run no matter what on the last delivery and for the other deliveries Klusener will try to get the ball away for a boundary or an easy single. It clearly showed their mental failings and looks like things haven't improved much. I empathize with them and hope they get over the line but against someone else.
Gollum Posted July 3, 2024 Posted July 3, 2024 This is a damn good squad they have built, will be in contention for next 3-4 years in all white ball tournaments. Just reward merit, don't have quota. Without Bavuma they would have won the Eden semi last year, Markram is 10 times the captain that Bavuma can dream of being. Lone Wolf 1
Gollum Posted July 3, 2024 Posted July 3, 2024 Another underrated choke will be the 2002 CT against us. Gibbs 100, Kallis 90+, coasting to the target, then Yuvi had that great catch to dismiss Gibbs, collapse. putrevus and Frustrated 2

Keep losing to us lol Australia seem to be the only one capable of beating us in one off final in wc events. Nz and pak being the other teams where we have lost grand finals in champions trophy. Is champions trophy really a WC level trophy though? I mean does anyone take it seriously? Is it taken seriously? For me order is 1) Away test series wins in sena and or wtc now I guess although that's flawed. Prefer series wins tbh. 2) odi world cup = t20 world cup T20 is more popular now so equal footing. 3) away series bilateral wins in sena? 4) champions trophy 5)Asia cup Ultimate_Game 1
AKane Posted July 3, 2024 Posted July 3, 2024 (edited) Its not just the runout in 1999 .... it was also that dropped catch of Waugh by Gibbs in the earlier match. Now the two put together - I don't think you can plan this. There is some karma in this. Not everything can be explained by science or logic. And it was SA's best fielder at the time, Gibbs, who dropped the catch. He didn't even drop it, he was planning to celebrate too early and lost control doing so. That 1999 stuff must be nightmare for them. So many chances in different games and they simply refused to cross the line. AKane 1

For the people saying "it might have been fixed"..... do you really wait to throw a match on a runout on the penultimate ball? It is more likely something more predictable. What if there is a bad misfield by Aus or the ball takes an edge and goes past WK..? I just don't think you can plan 1999. If you want to throw it, just lose by 5 or 10 runs to be on safe side. The Hound Posted July 3, 2024 Posted July 3, 2024 (edited) Yes.... The scar of this bottling will prevent them from winning any ICC trophy for the next 15-20 years at least. Edited July 3, 2024 by The Hound

Lets just put it this way - SA are not going to get a situation better than 30 off of 30 balls with 6 wickets in hand in a final no matter Bumrah or whoever bowling 2 of those overs. They are not going to get an Afghanistan type match for both SF and Finals. So they are just going to have to learn to deal with it. Sometimes you have to get down and dirty and wrest the trophy from the opponent. This time they just had to play normal shots, nothing special was required as the hard work had already been done. They still botched it. Again nobody is going to hand over the trophy to them on a platter the way the Afghans lost the SF. The Hound, Suhaan and Ultimate_Game 3
