Danger of Shubman Gill turning into Indian 'Babar Azam'

Now that Kohli and Rohit are on their last legs, BCCI will want a face for Indian cricket. Gill may be that candidate, 3 format player, captain, with looks, being a batsman, SM following, PR, Bollywood connections etc.

Reminds me of Babar Azam. Now Babar may have seen a big fall, but talking about Babar of 2018-21, even better version of this Gill. And how PCB/Raja tried to make their own Kohli, and how a Frankenstein was created, which is consuming their cricket now.

Gill to his credit did well in the Eng tests (after getting a long long rope), excellent ODI career till date and playing T20Is despite being a misfit. Also GT captain at this young age.

His selfishness in recent Zim series irked me, how he removed Abhishek Sharma as opener after his 40 ball ton, only to bat selfishly himself whole series. He seems to have more goodwill than Jaiswal in Indian cricket circles, and seems like a permanent all format player based on Rathour's recent interview. A shame because for 2026 T20 WC, if we don't unleash Abhi-Jaiswal opening combo, it will be a big self goal.

KL, Pant may be other candidates to be faces of Indian cricket (Bumrah deserves but has 'low caste' occupation of bowler), but both have an additional skill. KL is a big no-no for me, Pant is ok but may have fitness concerns because of keeping burden.....but prefer him over Gill because of his unselfish approach. SKY, Pandya are limited or already too old, and single/double format specialists. Iyer has creds in IPL and unselfish, but too many limitations including bad books of the powers that be.

Don't think low caste/class people like Jaiswal or Rinku will be ever considered, nor will our backward/regressive janta accept them, which is a disgrace.

i agree with one caveat...

he doesn't have big name ipl franchise backing and marketing....

i will not be surprised if he forces a move to rcb to become their captain...

gujju titans still small fish in big IPL pond dominated by best ever ipl team CSK, cheaters bambais, KKR and zero titles RCB....

3 formats, 3 captains, ideally even red ball coaching staff must be setup differently.

And stop this 3 format players' chwtiyapa, this is an era for specialization. Curtail player power, don't make an individual too big. We may lose out in some places but overall we'll win much more.

The views expressed here seem a tad extreme in my opinion.

When Kohli arrived on the scene, he wasn't half as good. Even likes of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli took good 3-4 years to settle down. And to think, back in the days the headache was only of two formats. Now we are dealing with three. Complicates the matters much more. The fact is - a player doesn't excel until his true range is discovered. For Rohit it was promotion up top the order. For Kohli it was settling down at 3/4 post Tendulkar retirement.

Same applies to Gill, Jaiswal, and every other player that are not a "permanent feature" in the setup.

If we limit the discussion to T20Is, I am of the opinion that the best option India has is to play Gill at 3 with the full license to openers to maximize the power play. Gill is going through a lean patch at the time being, but lets not forget. Gill and Yashaswi are our best hope to continue the legendary Indian batting legacy.

Mentioned this before as well, he has all the signs of being 2nd copy of babar azam.

Bcci is looking for the new face of Ind cricket, previously they put all their hope and resources in KL and Pant, both failed in 1 way or other. Kolhi though a stat-padder but he had hunger to win and be the top guy. When he came in Tendulkar, Dhoni where the faces so he had to do better than them.

Gill ticks many check-boxes for Bcci to invest in him and try him in all 3 formats, giving him nick-names, endorsing v.niche records.

Gill has shown this Stat-paddling characteristic not just once but multiple times, he will be babar azam with lower avg. and bit better sr.

His T20i SR is now 139 that to because of Hefty 180 and 190 SR against Afgn and NZ, against rest his SR is below 130. He lacks power game and the intent too.

Problem is how the things are perceived , ppl didnt like Rohit/Dhawan/Kolhi as they said all play same style and with less SR, how KL/Rohit/Kolhi is better and how is this Kolhi/Rohit/Pant any better.

Ppl still backs Pant in white-ball (t20Is) he has more than 65 matches now has SR below 130 near to 125s. He is no good in t20 he lack power, does not have off side shots, plays lose shots in the air hoping they land safely which works in Test as the field is not that spread out.

Some say he has not got the t20 template till now, there is no t20 template unless they are accumulators or Babar/Rizwan who plays most of the balls and get them selves to 50s with lower SR and hope some1  else play a 20-30 ball 35-40 runs innings or A gayle who can play a maiden and then get multiple overs with ~20 runs.

yes specialisation is need of the hour. You can't expect a guy to have perfect technique for Test and then have power game for T20s. Mindset is totally different too.

He was one match away from being dropped after the second England test. Straight shootout between him and Iyer and he scored a century.. Agarkar is not a fool and he is pretty level headed.. they ll clip his wings. There was this story about his discipline in United States all to ensure he was not exceeding his remit.. he is a good player but has a fundamental weakness against moving ball. He throws his hands at balls rather than waiting for it. KL whatever said and done has become a master in leaving balls in seaming and swinging conditions. Hope Gill learns the same..we need him to at least average in mid 40s in Australia to have a chance of even drawing the series.. he is stepping into the shoes of Pujara, the person who was majorly responsible for winning 3 out of the 4 tests we have won in Aus in last 2 tours: Adelaide,Melbourne ( 2018) and Brisbane..Does Gill have it in him to re do what he did in Brisbane.. time will tell..and we will wait.. tick tock

That's cause of T20 and IPL. Biggest reason we need seperate players from seperate formats.

I agree..he got under pressure due to lower SRs and had to change his game a bit....

no, Gill maybe bad but there was no competition from Iyer of all people. Sarfaraz has taken Iyer's spot now

Competition was who will be dropped. Gill or Iyer. Patidar was waiting in wings and there was clamour of him replacing one. Both Gill n Iyer had gifted their wickets in first test and floundered in the next test. Then Gill scored the century..  Patidar got Tadipar ed and Sarfraz took his chance. All said and done in Indian conditions for test cricket we have abundance of riches in batting

All format Indian cricketers better than Gill (all things considered)....

1. Jaiswal

2. Rutu G

3. Pant

4. KL

5. Iyer (?)

Please remove KL from that list with immediate effect! I can take anyone over him. His loser vibes are enough to sink any team. I'll even take a 40 year old retired Rohit over him. KL doesn't provide any value other than looking good in group matches and going MIA when needed.
