vvvslaxman Posted July 17, 2024 Posted July 17, 2024 Fear of getting dropped from test side after string of low scores definitely had some psychological impact on him.. He wants to be an all format player. So he is statpadding to stay relevant. Hope selectors and coach communicate clearly what is expected of him. What the brand is. THis is definitely not the brand. I don't question his capability. Ultimate_Game 1
singhvivek141 Posted July 17, 2024 Posted July 17, 2024 Gill at the moment isnt a T20 batter, the sooner folks at power realize the better. He has the ability though to become a top class ODI and good Test batter. Jaiswal is the only one who has the ability for all 3 formats the way they are supposed to play. He has all the gears, Rinku too has the ability, but I won't try to make a Surya out of him at this moment. Superstar culture should be a thing of past. Just like Bollywood...even cricket should let go of such tags. Gollum and Ultimate_Game 2

StraightDrive26 Posted July 17, 2024 Posted July 17, 2024 This forum is getting ridiculous. In another year or two there will not be a single Indian player who will be good enough to play for India. Might as well not have a team at all. Leave Shubman alone, what he did in that one Australia tour is more than majority of the players around the world haven't done in their entire careers. He is still young and he will learn and improve. If we keep dropping players like this India will not be the best in the world anytime. Please don't compare Shubman with Babar, Shubman has a SR of 103 in ODIs and 140 in T20Is. Also Shubman surely had no say in selecting this squad? He was not the official Indian team captain, he was just a stand in deeppoint and Sandz 1 1

By 2018 he was considered to be the best under-19 product ever from INdia. He had impetus batting style of playing shot a ball. That proved to be his nemesis. That impacted consistency. He was in danger of losing Test spot. Now he has become more circumspect in order to achieve consistency. That habit has spilled over to other formats. That is fine for ODIs. For T20s he has to expand his range. He is a hard worker by all accounts. He can find a way to shine in all 3 formats. singhvivek141 1

Rohit & Kohli played mostly is the era where they had the liberty or "excuse" to take their time because supposedly the MO was weak and our batting depth was severely compromised. Our deep batting depth played a key role in this T20 WC. That impact sooner or later will spillover to other white ball format as well. Bowlers who can bat till no 9 is going to be the norm as the pitches becomes flatter. If others around Gill will start to play positively, he will surely feel the pressure to buckle up quickly. Already he is feeling the heat as Jaiswal has leapfrogged him and Abhishek/Ruturaj are at his neck in T20's/ODI's. Gollum, rollingstoned and Ultimate_Game 3

I am frankly not a fan of playing all 3 formats. 2 formats should be the lock-in. More players in the rotation and it will give us options if we meet any unforeseen situations of too many injuries. But I understand for BCCI it will be too much of a hassle to maintain so many players. Gollum 1

Hence he did just the bare minimum to win the series and the control was with captain 100%. When we will have a long term coach. I think there will be more say and Gill won't get such free hand. Zero_Unit Posted July 17, 2024 Posted July 17, 2024 I don't support 1 captain for 3 format as we saw with Kohli. It created some major sheet hole drama and what not in our cricket. 3 format, 3 captain, less drama, less power in the captains hand to go on ego trip. Babar Azam as op pointed out is totally and royally screwing pak cricket left and right. We see similarities with all Asian teams when they are given captaincy for all 3 format. Shakib was another good example when he was the captain for all 3 format. Hasaranga would have probably inherited all 3 format captaincy too had he not retired in test, and as we all witnessed the ego level of his went off the roof after getting captaincy. Gollum 1

Yes,but Abhishek is yet to prove himself in Odis though There is no evidence of him being an ideal partner for loi opening with Jaiswal For that he needs to play FC But he should get a fair run in t20s as he had a good IPL and T20 domestic season plus he can give few overs ,he deserves his place as an opener in t20s surely Sai Sudarshan is also one guy who can do a good job in Odis as opener and Gill as no.3 Gollum and raki05 1 1
deepdynamo Posted July 17, 2024 Posted July 17, 2024 Gill is insecure in T20I. Jaiswal and Abhishek should open for India. No brainers. Sky, Pant, Hardik, Rinku are sure shot in the middle. That leaves only the anchor role - straight shootout with Gaikwad.
Gollum Posted July 17, 2024 Author Posted July 17, 2024 McCullum called out his mindset for T20s when he was in KKR, basically his safe/selfish batting style. Remember many reports/interviews from that time. Shubman Gill & Nitish Rana are suffocated by their insecurities. They have to avoid playing the safe game coz there are 100s of batsmen available in India to do that. If top order can turn it around then only KKR has a slight chance at semi finals. : Brendon McCullum (KKR coach) pic.twitter.com/ppoUJChpsl — (@StarkAditya_) May 31, 2021 But what was specially worrisome in recent Zim series was his decision to stat pad and demote Abhishek after that 40 ball 100. Rarely do you see such shamelessness, and here was a young captain doing precisely that, trying to eliminate competition. Big red flag. raki05, Suhaan, Vk1 and 2 others 1 4
spiritb2 Posted July 17, 2024 Posted July 17, 2024 (edited) Gill shouldn't be near T20I team & Kela Rahul shouldn't be near any Indian team. But both of them getting captaincy stint. Unfortunate Edited July 17, 2024 by spiritb2 Suhaan, Norman, Ultimate_Game and 3 others 3 1 2
TellTheTruth Posted July 17, 2024 Posted July 17, 2024 At the risk of sounding like kl rajul I think strike rate is over rated in t20 cricket. If you look back histroically at t20 finals the winning teams don't have top order batsman smashing 20 ball 50s. It's normally someone playing the marlon Samuel's role of scoring a slowish 50 and some timely lower order hitting. More important then top order strike rate is batting depth and not running out of batsman in the slog overs. As great as bumrah is, SA lost because mashrav and Jansen faced too many deliveries and because arshdeep and bumrah took early wickets. Had SA had wickets in hand or if they had more batting depth even bumrah wouldnt have been able to save India that day. Even if strike rate of the openers is the most important thing for t20 cricket our selfish batsman have strike rates of around 140 which is as good as any other team.
