One good and heartwarming  thing about Indian athletes in the last few Olympics, none of the athletes are wild card or charity case: they qualified and came through the system and competed. They didn’t win a medal is a different debate, eventually these will be converted but can definitely see a rise in sports culture in the last 15 years. Taking this positively.

yeah you can see that clearly in cwg, asian games and larger contingents in hockey.

 

lots more final qualifications, even if not converting to medals.

Sports culture is simply answering a simple questions.

 

Does an average child in T1 ( lets forget 2 or 3) cities has the ability to pick a sport and be provided with modern facilities and infrastructure + [parental backing with money/time etc. This is where future Olympians are made and identified. If we want to improve our medal tally, this is where we need to target money and not just on exceptions to the circumstances.

 

Delhi has Diving and pool infrastructure from CWG, why isnt this being used to train the best swimmers in the country?

And kids need to be trained even before 10 of you need them to win at Olympic levels. We do the same in dance and have some of the best dancer in the world.

 

The sports lifespan of an Olympic player is very short, most players who win are very young from teenage to early 20s, they need to train from a very young ago so that they are ready when they are 17-18.

Multiple factors at play. India always had somewhat of a badminton culture. However after Gopichand came into the picture and started producing stars like Sindhu, Saina and a lot of other badminton talent, you see badminton academies everywhere in Andhra-Telangana with 1000s of kids trying their hand.

 

in fact my ancestral property was rented out to one such badminton academy which by all accounts seem flourishing.

 

You will see javelin talent coming through too now.

 

Wrestling- Boxing we have enough culture to get us 1-2 medals every Olympics, all we need is that one big star to win the bigger medals.

 

i feel it is upward trajectory for some sports.

again its a top down approach- you need an exception to win a medal for kids to take up the sport . This is more akin to a short term popularity wave as opposed to creating a string sporting culture from childhood, regardless if there is success or not. Hypothetically lets say Neeraj doesn't win any more medals in Javelin- most probably the interest will just vanish overnight. Its evident in IPL, people chase after successful franchises by jumping on the bandwagon AFTER they have achieved success 

 

Wrestling, Boxing and weightlifting are relatively cheap sports to invest in infrastructure for the returns you get- as a short term these sports should be looked at.

yeah badminton, shooting, wrestling, boxing, athletics will get us 10-15 from 2036 with 2-3 golds.

 

maybe even more tbh.

A govt job is the worst way to incentivise Olympic medals- US athletes don't get gov jobs. They get scholarships at college and facilities/coaches only. They still win medals without having a gov job
