Abhimanyu Easwaran continues to bang the doors of the Indian Test team as he scored a century for Bengal in the Ranji Trophy against Uttar Pradesh. This was the fourth first class match in a row in which Easwaran managed to get to three figures.

Easwaran's extraordinary recent performances, coupled with his rich domestic record over the years, has made him a prime contender  to be India's backup opener in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Apart from this being the fourth consecutive match in which he has scored a century, Easwaran has also scored centuries in all but one of his last five red-ball games. Easwaran's scores from the last 10 innings read 127*, 191, 116, 19, 157*, 13, 4, 200*, 72, 65.

How does he break the perception that he isn't just a domestic stalwart?  He's going to spend his career on the fringes given that Rohit is still playing, Jaiswal has cemented himself....

is the object to impress girls and girly men, or get selected for India?

It's all about marketing,
You need to have a lobby working behind you, to promote your inclusion. Write PR essays for you in the Social Media and emotionally blackmail the selectors with guilt.
Another way is through IPL.

Why isn't he playing the IPL? Don't remember seeing him ever. Was he ever part of any IPL squad?

Unluckiest Indian cricketer in a long long time. This gen's Amol Mazumdar.

S Badrinath comes to mind.

Dude was averaging 60 something in domestics, but got to play some 2-3 Tests. He didn't look like he belonged at the international level, but deserved a longer rope given his domestic exploits

Selectors should give these run machines a min of 3 tests to keep the ranji performers motivated. There are plenty of mediocre teams at international level these guys can play against

Easwaran was actually selected on a previous England tour squad under the Kohli/Shastri cheerleading autocracy. A spot opened up due to injury but they deemed Easwaran not worthy and even asked BCCI to ship over a replacement but it was denied. Kohasstri then in their wisdom made KL Rahul open (was selected for middle order), snubbed Easwaran and the rest is history...

Name one player who made it to Indian test team on this bakwaas basis.

Amre was good too ?

Amre was unlucky, he was probably better than Mazumdar, I'd put him close to Dravid level.  He was dropped from test team after ODI failures.  India played **** ton of ODIs back then and there wasnt really a concept of separate teams by format.  I mean, obviously Dravid comparisons are speculative, but he was pretty damn good.

Badri was good, very good but not that great.  Unlucky for sure with the clog in the middle order. Honestly even Rahane was bit unlucky, spent some of his best years waiting for his chance.

Ajinkya Rahane for WTC on basis of IPL.

SKY

Shreyas Iyer

KS Bharath

IPL gives recognition and instant fame. Player rise through ranks quickly.

Biggest example of lobbying in recent years, Mukesh Kumar. Ganguly backed him endlessly coz he plays for DC, became an all 3 format bowler. NO such favour for Akashdeep. Who rose through ranks and still only playing one format i.e. Tests.

Sanju Samson is another example of lobbying, Gaekwad is next in line. Getting precedence over Sai Sudharshan.

Amol Mazumdar came in the era of Sachin Tendulkar, where he had set a benchmark for young players. I still remember in the early 90's when the Amol Mazumdar hype was at it's peak due to his domestic exploits there was this domestic ODI series where India play against India A, B & C. Top players from domestic circuit participate in that tournament. Mazumdar was facing Indian pacers and Srinath was at his peak in pace at that time. Mazumdar absolutely struggled and could hardly put bat on ball. I kind of feel that innings and that tournament pushed him behind the pack. After that he kept doing great for Mumbai but was never considered for India.
