When he did that in ENgland he was on 146. Bowlers were at his mercy. With a long off in place he still went after him. We made peace with the fact "This is how he plays". But as he gets older where he mistimes a lot more now than before he has to recalibrate his approach. Don't take chance when you have full control over bowling. Don't gift your wicket away when the opposition is wating for mistake. what if he was actually told by TM to go for the win? If he did not follow the instructions, he would have been jeopardized/ostracized within the team (especially as someone a bit less experienced). I am not saying that he is blameless (1st innings shot was all his own mistake), but the situation post-tea looks pretty strange. Edited December 30, 2024 by Vijy

But given the context where draw was distinctly possible this shot was a suicidal shot. They had set a fielder specifically for that miscue. He did exactly that. Yes he was a match winner. But you can offset all your match winning efforts with match losing efforts like this.

In the latter case, taking on Head would be a natural scenario. Lord 1

The thing is he himself batted like a brainless clown against Southee and Henry in the NZ test series. Lack of game awareness from everyone is shocking. Wish we had Ashwin as captain for sometime to geekify these guys. Vijy 1

He took the easiest bowler on too. Vijy 1
Vijy Posted December 30, 2024 Posted December 30, 2024 (edited) @Lord do you know if you or someone else can find the exact clip? I did not have the TV on if/when Rohit mentioned that team was instructed to go for win post-tea. Or does anyone else know for certain - post a clip? Edited December 30, 2024 by Vijy

The Hound Posted December 30, 2024 Posted December 30, 2024 RoKos disasterclass has saved him the most actually lol
kosingh Posted December 30, 2024 Posted December 30, 2024 Really need some nerd in the setup. Gambhir, Rohit, Virat are not that.

I am sure there are some series where MSD had such avg in SENA. Pant should move to no. 6. have either gill/jurel/sarfaraz or reddy/sundar at no. 5 instead. Edited December 30, 2024 by Vijy
Bigg Brother Posted December 30, 2024 Posted December 30, 2024 Pant's brainfade numbers are going to increase from now on. It is that he has played some unreal innings based on the reputation of he plays like that and credit to him and he has won so many games as batter which no other wkt keeper batter from India has. But as the stature of batsman grows, he will have to bear the brunt and criticism of such shots. Frustrated 1

It is unsustainable for him to be shoring up the top order, keeping wickets and being expected to be the key batting performer in the side. He is setup for failure. A good solution would be to bring in Jurel as keeper and play Pant as a pure top order batter. Would be high risk move as people respond differently to responsibilities being reduced

rageaddict Posted December 30, 2024 Posted December 30, 2024 Pant has many skills similar to Shahid Afridi too, the ability to play an irresponsible shot at the most inappropriate time leading to collapse of his team.

That's rich. Pant and Jaiswal played 300 balls between them. How can a guy falling as the 4th wicket after an 88 run partnership with less than a session for more than half the team to survive be responsible for the defeat ? Lord and Vijy 2
