what if he was actually told by TM to go for the win? If he did not follow the instructions, he would have been jeopardized/ostracized within the team (especially as someone a bit less experienced). I am not saying that he is blameless (1st innings shot was all his own mistake), but the situation post-tea looks pretty strange.

He can play for any reason. But given the context where draw was distinctly possible this shot was a suicidal shot.  They had set a fielder specifically for that miscue. He did exactly that.  Yes he was a match winner. But you can offset all your match winning efforts with match losing efforts like this.

My point is the following: did he play it by himself or was he instructed to hit by TM (to go for win)? In the latter case, taking on Head would be a natural scenario.

yes Rohit said they were looking to win at tea time. This clearly would've been communicated to Pant as well.

@Lord do you know if you or someone else can find the exact clip? I did not have the TV on if/when Rohit mentioned that team was instructed to go for win post-tea. Or does anyone else know for certain - post a clip?

22 avg IMO is not terrible for keeper. I am sure there are some series where MSD had such avg in SENA.

 

Pant should move to no. 6. have either gill/jurel/sarfaraz or reddy/sundar at no. 5 instead.

Pant's brainfade numbers are going to increase from now on.  It is that he has played some unreal innings based on the reputation of he plays like that and credit to him and he has won so many games as batter which no other wkt keeper batter from India has. But as the stature of batsman grows, he will have to bear the brunt and criticism of such shots.

Yes but he should really be batting at 7. It is unsustainable for him to be shoring up the top order, keeping wickets and being expected to be the key batting performer in the side. He is setup for failure. A good solution would be to bring in Jurel as keeper and play Pant as a pure top order batter. Would be high risk move as people respond differently to responsibilities being reduced

That's rich. Pant and Jaiswal played 300 balls between them. How can a guy falling as the 4th wicket after an 88 run partnership with less than a session for more than half the team  to survive be responsible for the defeat ?

no. 6 is a good compromise. 5 proper performing batters + keeper (pant) + 2 ARs (batting AR, bowling AR) + 3 strike bowlers. that's the desirable combo
