The belief that you must dip in the Sangam is just as valid as the belief that you can reap the benefits by going downstream. It is all faith-based.

 

Authorities should probably have expected this and made arrangements to cover all bases - just in case.

Ya, it’s the authorities, man. People have no fundamental duties or expected to have common sense.  There are conflicting reports why the stampede happened only in one zone and not all over. Close to 10 crores took a dip yesterday and this incident caused only 30 deaths. Even one dying is bad, but in such a large scale event, it becomes important to note. We  have to wait for official response on why it happened which is still being investigated. I was speaking about why people have to believe that only sangam ghat is shresht and start rushing only to that place. Even CM Yogi said the same thing that people can go to any place in Prayagraj to take a snan , we have always been adjusting our beliefs based on practical thoughts of those current times.

Not trying to "blame." The authorities have responded well it appears from all accounts. But if it is known that some people prefer the Sangam dip, especially at a particular time, maybe it's worth putting in more safeguards and organization around that. 

 

I was mainly addressing your point about beliefs. You can't control those - it is a personal belief. CM Yogi can't prove that downstream dip has the same effect as Sangam dip. Or they can't prove that Sangam dip is superior. People believe what they believe. It may be better to make arrangements to cater to them if a particular critical number is anticipated.

Considering the numbers at stake there is no way small tragedies can ever be avoided. People have no idea how numbers work and how large numbers we are talking about.

 

In any sample of 400 million people you take on earth you will have accidents and deaths over couple of months and there is no way of avoiding it. That's more than entire population of America.

 

Now imagine this number in a small area of the world. Just by sheer numbers and odds there will be accidents and deaths.

 

There is no way to eradicate these unless you eradicate all accidents and deaths from earth. You cannot plan anything for 100s of millions of people, even one single action by someone can lead to unpredictable results. No government or organisation is the world can control 400m and ensure nothing happens.

If we use this logic everywhere then no event would happen anywhere.

 

Even in Mecca as well, many have been crushed to death during the visit. Yet, the haj continues every year uninterrupted. 

 

You can’t stop such things 100%, what you can do is learn from such incidents and try to avoid it.

 

In 2013, many folks were killed in the stampede at Prayagraj junction coz there was last minute change in the platform.

 

Govt learned from that and in this Mahakumbh along with Prayagraj junction, other sub stations like Subedarganj, Rambagh, Jhusi, Sangam, Chheoki etc are also managing the crowd and traffic. 

 

What needs to be done is to expand the mela city land area. Which means clearing out properties, which locals may not like.

To Kya ghar mein bathe? These questions are not asked of congregations of other religions! It is not 40 crores on one day, it is over 40 days. On the mouni amavasya day, the footfall was 7-8 crores and 3 crores were getting out of prayagraj.

The earliest reference to Kumbh Mela is found as early as around 650 AD, so it's a almost 1400 years old tradition.

 

No one needs to "hold it", Hindus have been doing this forever and will continue to do so.
