He is the best wicket taking ODI spinner we have. 

 

Can't discard him without giving him a proper run after his rehab.

No he didn't, because as multiple posts have pointed out, he is being over ruled by agarkar and rohit every time.  No coach can do anything under the circumstances

Going by ILT20, wrist spinners like Hasaranga and Zampa have shown more wicket taking threat and finger spinners have only been economical .

 

But it might be different in ODI's. 

 

Back in Asia Cup 2018,  Chahal was less effective than Jadeja.

 

For me the key is whether there's going to be dew or not. 

 

Those Asia Cup pitches were often  sluggish in the afternoon and batting beauties by night. 

 

In case the pitches play better by day or we lose the toss and we are forced to defend under lights , we need the extra fast bowler instead of 4 spinners

Then, imo, they should add Rana and another pacer.  4 spinners is a joke.  Even in the Caribbean, Chahal was a complete waste of a spot in the squad. 

 

Even if it's a domestic guy like Anshul Kamboj, it's fine

How does this even make sense ? Apparently Gambhir had enough influence to drop Rohit, the all powerful captain per you,  from  in the 5th test but according to you he is a helpless bystander when it comes to other decisions.

Your argument is basically that Gambhir is just a common person occupying the coach slot and nothing can be expected from him because all decisions are made by Agarkar and Rohit.

In the England series, the question will be on No. of batsman vs no. of allrounders vs no of bowlers. Who is going to do these roles is yet in the air. Everybody knows the superstar Top 3 and the 2 veteran all-rounders will play.

 

In the T20 series, Surya played 3 batsmen, 4 all-rounders, 3 bowlers consistently (Batting up to No. 8, 7 bowling options)

In ODIs, in the WC we saw 5 batsmen, 1 all rounder, and 4 bowlers (Batting up to No. 7, 5 bowling options)

 

Hardik is back and having 5 batters was unusual, so ODI team will have 4 batsman, 2 all-rounders, and 4 bowlers. This ensures they have 6 bowling options.

Team: Rohit, Virat, Gill, Shreyas, WK, Jadeja, Hardik, Harshit Rana, Arshdeep, Shami, Kuldeep Yadav

 

If they want to bat till No. 8, they replace a bowler (Kuldeep) for an allrounder (Axar or Washy): 4 batsman, 3 all-rounders, and 3 bowlers.

Team: Rohit, Virat, Gill, Shreyas, WK, Jadeja, Hardik, Axar Patel, Harshit Rana, Arshdeep, Shami

 

If they want seven bowling options, they replace the No. 4 batter (Shreyas) for an allrounder (Washy): 3 batsman, 4 all-rounders, and 3 bowlers.

I prefer the last one, exactly like the T20 team!

Our team needs a good pitch inspector.. infact bcci should advertise for this role and pay that guy good amount of money. You then go with 4-1-2-4 or 4-1-1-5 combination factoring  the inspector's advise. You don't pick chahal in rainy conditions sf19 or spinners in bengaluru test
