What is even the point of domestic cricket?

The contrast between Kohli-Rohit and others couldn't be more apparent. These two were picked when they were youngsters, and backed after initial failures and in case of Rohit failing for 6+ years. And yet they don't give the same benefit to other youngsters.

If Kohli and Rohit were treated the same way they've treated other youngsters, their careers would've been over before it got started.

The believe in ind cricketing circles is if you have not made it to ind side till certain age then you will not be able to make it ever. If they were not good back then how can they be good now.

That's why Ind would get player from U19 team and give them time to grow and get their feet settled into intnl cricket. Yuvi, Kaif, Rp, kolhi, rohit, dhawan all are product of same ideology.

Only recently that Ind selectors have started to pick player in late 20s or into 30s because of IPL and t20 cricket, as these players have understood that now they can not make it to intnl cricket they changed their game suited for t20s where they get picked in IPL team and there after have a chance for Ind. SKY, DK emergence into t20s, tripathi, jitesh now even sanju is on same track etc.. plus these u19 player lacks the power game to make it to t20 sides.

The issue with  domestic is the quality of fast bowlers, most teams lacks proper 140+kmph bowlers, some even donot have 135 kmph bowlers hence the quality of cricket looks poor. but now these domestic(Smat, vht and domestic leagues) gives chances to these domestic cricketer to showcase if they are good at white-ball or not to be picked for IPL.

bcci should mandate that a fast bowler has to be 135+kmph, no more of these dibbly-dolly pacers who are just spinner with longish run-ups.

He has had a monster run. You pick in form players, not players who accomplished something 5 years ago and can't even put bat on ball now.

This Karun Nair inclusion in ODI side discourse is among the worst on ICT, and that includes a lot of bad discourses.

How can you ask for his inclusion on the basis of one bumper season alone without suggesting who he replaces.

Also, ignoring him is not about not valuing domestic cricket because the ones who are getting a chance ahead of him have not only done well in domestic cricket but also international cricket.

The outrage should be if someone who has not been in the reckoning comes into the picture without performances or performances inferior to him.

Till then, crying foul about Nair's exclusion is just white noise

Yes not sure why this is getting such a traction, VHT has been big scoring event for 3/4 years now. Nt sure which season was it when every1 was scoring 200s.

Nair has been an average player for years now, this is the only season that he scored runs. Out of his 8 100s 4/5 have came this season. Ind selectors mostly wait for 2 seasons to see if the player is consistent unless there is some1 who can fit into team rt. away say an AR, or a wkt who get fast tracked quickly.

There was not such a noise when Padikal had similar season, think Shaw had similar season too.

Plus its takes alot to put your bet on an already tried and tested player who is having a good season after such a long gap. And he is 33 yo, Ind is already carrying 2 such seniors and selectors may be under pressure to drop them, why would they get another player who is not getting any younger.

Unlucky Nair. He should have picked. Screwed by Rohit Sharma yet again. If I remember correctly, Nair was dropped after the 300 to make way for injured Rohit. He was never picked again.

Nair wasn't dropped after scoring 300.  He got exposed in the next test series against Australia at home.

That it correct. Same was the case with Kambli. Everyone talks about his habits and double hundreds but not about his issues against short ball.

It's tough to go with someone "new" for a major international tournament without playing bi lateral at least... Had it been just a series Vs England then picking Nair would have been fine

Think of an India second 11: Gaekwad Jaiswal Sudharshan Parag Jurel Tilak NKR and not counting Rinku...  All of whom arguably deserve chances too been on the fringes for longer.

These guys are younger and some can bowl too

He was dropped after exactly 4 innings after 300. He came in different weird situations in those 4 innings, sometimes asked to just hit to set a target with no time to settle.

He batted at no 6 and no 7 in 3 out of those 4 innings when his 300 was at no 5.

He got out twice to spin (once stumped while trying to hit a 6) and twice against ball reversing a lot. How is that being "exposed"?

He didn't fall for short ball or any obvious weakness in any of those 4 innings.

He still scored 23 and 26 it in 2 of those 4 innings. That's not called being "exposed".

That's not enough to judge someone who scored 300, particularly just playing second series. Even many greats have failed first couple of series. Kohli couldn't put bat to ball in his first English series.

Stop being pedantic or contrary for the sake of being pedantic, it's just attention seeking at this point.

Domestic is now useless, there is no focus on performance by BCCI.

It's all about brand value, franchise power and sponsorship.

IPL is the only option, other tournaments can be scrapped and selectors/coaches can go and f**k themselves.

He was not part of the playing XI in the very next test because Ajinkya Rahane returned.

Some may call it a conspiracy theory but I have strong doubts that Kohli never wanted young batsmen to shine. He tried his best to kill Pant's career too but Pant was somehow destined.

All younger batsmen were discarded after just a few failures while oldies who didn't threaten Kohli's solo star image were preferred.

There are reports that Kumble-Kohli rift started over Karun's selection.

He played with KL's career too.

Difference is that these two performed at a high level right from the get go and the team never had the opportunity to drop them. Even then Jaiswal has yet to crack the ODI team and was dropped from WT20s team despite being the best batter in the team.

Real test would've been if they had failed and needed support the way Rohit and Kohli were given despite failing in the earlier part of their careers. Backing someone who's already performing at a high level isn't really backing someone. That would've been backing Karun Nair, Jurel, Sarfaraz and countless more who failed in a Test or a series and then dropped.

Gill is getting all the backing despite being a low 30 averaging test cricketer, BCCI is betting on the wrong horse. It looks like backing is based on marketability rather than ability/performance.

Scored 326 in a Test and never picked again. Averaged 750 in Vijay Hazare tournament topping the charts by a huge margin and not picked.

And then BCCI has come up with a "plan" to make domestic cricket mandatory. My question is what for? When domestic performances don't matter why the charade about playing domestic cricket? If domestic performances don't matter, it really doesn't matter whether the "stars" play them or not and that's why likes of Kohli and Rohit don't waste their time there.

When domestic performers like Karun, Rinku and others are consistently ignored and sidelined, we may as well shut the whole thing down.

Bro, Karun has done well in this season, even though its great every cricketing organisation waits for some time before roping in a 33 year old batsman. As of now my problem with BCCI is more about why they still don't have Jaiswal in main eleven, Karun Nair is not a concern right now.

The eleven I would have liked:

Jaiswal

Gill

Kohli (last chance in ODIs coz its one format he has done reasonably well)

Iyer

Samson

Pandya

Axar

Rana

Shami

Yadav

Bumrah

This is the biggest bakwass I have heard here, KL Rahul got continuous backing and kept on producing middling performances, Kohli isn't the reason why KL is a mental midget.

Also, another point for the cricket illiterates:

Karun Nair isn't an international standard batsman.

He didn't do much in the series vs Aus and then his numbers in fc domestics were average bcoz of which guys like Hanuma Vihari, Mayank Agarwal were able to get in.

BCCI made a very good choice by dumping Nair in 2017.
