vvvslaxman Posted July 16, 2025 Posted July 16, 2025 In hindsight INdia bowled them out too soon. There is no way they were going to declare at 195. INdia had to bat during an uncomfortable one hour which was too many overs for England to make a dent. Indian batsmen were in no win situation. That is why Jaiswal's brainfade needs to be questioned. Gill against old ball this chase would have been a cake walk when you look at the way Bumrah and Siraj survived. These are all out of the box thinking.

His fans/ PR used to refer to that MCG test to show that how aggression bring the best out of him. But the truth is Kohli lost his cool after that brief altercation with Johnson and almost threw his wicket in that MCG test in 2014. Someone dropped his catch and then it was Rahane who calm him down. Those who follow that match live knew this. Even in 2017 Home series he was bullied by Aussies (averaging in single digit) where his aggression evaporated and could not face the heat of raging Aussies. Before the series, There was all kind of talk of not sledging Kohli on cricket.com.au as he thrives on it (tons of videos to hype the series) and as soon as the series began, Kohli couldn't handle it with bat and as Captain as well. StraightDrive26 Posted July 17, 2025 Posted July 17, 2025 Stop romanticising the past. Virat Kohli had to retire because he wasn't scoring any runs for years and was not contributing to the Test team anymore. He retired because he did not have the will to improve anymore in Tests. Playing LOIs is much easy. The white ball does not swing after 5-6 overs and the field is spread with flat wickets. So stop making Virat more than he actually was with the bat. He was very good till 2019, I agree but in his last 6 years in Tests he was horrible. Yes he was a very good captain but again he also had the best bowling attack at his disposal. Ishant was brilliant, Shami was fantastic and Bumrah was great. Siraj was a good backup bowler for Bumrah and Shami. Right now we only have Bumrah and Siraj isn't a main bowler and Akashdeep isn't consistent. So cannot compare the both. Just having aggressing will not help you bowl out opposition, you need the skill.

Tendulkar retirement because it was end of the era (VVS, Dravid retired a year and a half before him, even Sehwag in 2013 BGT). Almost all our highly rated batsmen are 4th innings chokers, even those with better numbers never finished the chases. That is why we have the worst 4th innings chasing record among top 8 teams. Pant may be the sole exception. Even in Mumbai test against NZ last year, he almost singlehandedly chased it down before getting a howler from TV umpire Reiffel.

Even his 2000 Nairobi assault on McGrath was as good or better than Sehwag's blitz against Gul in Mohali. Didn't play that many KOs, but FWIW, can't blame him for 1996 SF loss, he played a blinder but zero support. Was set for a 100 in 2000 CT final but got run out by Ganguly. No need to get defensive or triggered at the mention of Tendulkar. Edited July 17, 2025 by Gollum
