A fast bowler getting 300 test wkts with a sub 20 avg, that too without playing matches against weak nations like Pakistan, Zimbabwe, Bangladesh etc is unheard of. This will create an ultimate legacy for him. Indians, as they seek constant validation from west..the more Auzzie, English media will talk about Bumrah, more the future gen will idolise him. 300 test wkts will be an ultimate milestone. Gollum Posted January 24 Posted January 24 Even if Bumrah slows down a bit in his final stretch, he needs around 15-16 more tests to get to 300. We have 10 tests (including one-off against Afghans this June) in this cycle. Surely 18-20 in 27-29 cycle. He should get it done perhaps some time in 2028, provided he doesn't miss many tests. I don't want him to retire from T20s, because of frequent WCs, Olympics. Maybe he gives up ODIs after 27 WC.
MK55 Posted January 24 Posted January 24 The only thing I wish from him is fitness - want him to bowl similar to the way he used to bowl in the 2018 Aus series. The way Starc bowled this Ashes. I’ve seen him drop his pace lately after the first test or even in LOIs. That should not happen.

I think he has the hunger...fitness will be the key part. He's 32 already, by 34-35 his body may start to give up. So next year 2 years are critical for him.

So if he decides to retire with 19 avg and <45 SR, but fewer than 300 total, that would be better than chasing 300. Edited January 24 by BacktoCricaddict

So next year 2 years are critical for him. his age is probably the most genuine among his fellow Indian bowlers. Ishant Sharma with similar issues of fitness is still persisting. Bumrah too may pick n choose series and continue for couple of years more than we imagine.

He has taken over 100 wickets just in the last 2 years. It will take something catastrophic for him not to reach 300 wickets in tests. Gollum 1

That was my sloppily-made point.

That was my sloppily-made point. I think he can continue at same average and sr for next 3 years, which will get him nearer to 350, than 300. He might decline after that but is too good to be really bad. He is a wily customer who uses brains and learns new things, so even if he loses pace he can be effective like McGrath or Wasim in their older age (or Sachin in batting), even with injuries.
