Lucknow Odi. 2022. 40 overs match. India tottering at 51/4 and Sanju single handedly dragged India to the brink. 30 needed of last 6 balls he scored 20. When I was watching yesterdays match I was having flashbacks of this match. Calm composed and was hitting anywhere he wanted to.. no slogs Result South Africa vs India, 1st ODI South Africa tour of India SA 249/4 IND 240/8 South Africa won by 9 runs https://www.espncricinfo.com/series/south-africa-in-india-2022-23-1327499/india-vs-south-africa-1st-odi-1327509/full-scorecard Edited March 2 by neel roy Gollum 1

putrevus Posted March 2 Posted March 2 Gambhir is doing lap of honors for selecting Samson, somebody should be asking if he was so confident in him why was he not playing in first four or five matches.
Gollum Posted March 2 Posted March 2 Sanju could have easily tried for his 100. But he gave priority to team's requirements, faltu ka risk leke out ho jata toh there would have been nervy moments. He chose to stay till the end and ensure the job got done, glimpses of Kohli there. 97 is a special score for Indian cricket, also the best knock in 2011 final. BacktoCricaddict 1

Shows how forgettable bilaterals can be.

Thsi has to be one of the nervless innings after Kohli's 82 in a chase. This is essentially curtain for India from the home tournament where we are favorites.
vvvslaxman Posted March 2 Posted March 2 Cheeka was at the MCG when Virat made 82 against Pakistan. He rates Sanju's knock above that so much so he says he has never seen such an innings in chase. I think it is still sinking. We will realize the magnitude of this achievement in a few years from now. It would have been an ultimate embarrassment to get kicked out in super eight.

There are so many things Sanju did in this match by staying right through. One of the biggest thing that he did was keeping Akeal hosein their ace spinner away from the attack. AKeal Hosein is their star bowler. He hit him out of the attack. After that he was never brought on. One more wicket Akeal would have put a squeeze. Gollum 1

Cheeka is getting carried away, he has a tendency to do that. Stakes were higher yesterday night because elimination in a home WC before KOs is a massive slap to Indian cricket. But conditions were much tougher in MCG that day, and Pak bowling attack was suited to exploit that pitch. They made Poms huff and puff with a 135 target in the final, same venue. No other player in the history of cricket could have done what Kohli did that night, not even Sachin, Viv, Ponting, ABDV, Brook, Warner etc. My highest praise to Sanju will be that peak Kohli would have been proud of such an effort, what we witnessed in Eden. Long may he continue. Scarface 1

tapandrun Posted March 2 Posted March 2 (edited) When sanju 1st came into scene with IPL, it looked like he was most talented player Ind is going to see in the future. He was hitting pacers and spinner for 6s from the crease, it was unusual for any Ind batter of that time. He had a complete game be it accessing off or leg-side and decent power game- The kind of power game/stroke making that was only seen in Wi/Aus batters. In terms of talent he was very near to Rohit sharma. Yes sanju's career was blocked with Dhoni being there. But look at sanju's domestic records its not that good. It v.v.average. He only performed in IPls that too with 1-2 good games in whole IPL season thats it. Some would say he didnt get consistent chances but that is wht Ind cricket is- Some player get longer rope some wont. Jaiswal could be next big thing in all 3 formats , but he is only playing tests, this is how Ind cricket is. You get few chances and players have to grab those. Sanju has under achieved with all his talent. And this is now a reoccuring thing/pattern in INd cricket players does not improve to add on to what they already have -- ex:- bishnoi, kuldeep, gill, shaw... etc. Edited March 2 by tapandrun
Adamant Posted March 3 Posted March 3 Lets not forget that he averages 23 at 147 str rate and if you filter that down to top team the stats will look even more shambolic. Yes he did play a great knock but you know it was against the worst bowling lineup out of top 8 teams. I don’t have much confidence on him for the knockouts, hopefully Abhishek returns back to runs.

Same West Indian team defended 196 at Wankhede against England with 3 spinners. Sanju did not even allow any of their spinners to complete the quota.
vvvslaxman Posted March 3 Posted March 3 Sanju will be peppered with bouncers. He should be judicious. He shouldn't try to take on right away. Lord 1
