AKane Posted March 10 Posted March 10 It seems this Jacob Bethell is born and raised in Bridgetown Barbados? No wonder Sobers is always crowing about him.... There has to be some control on who plays for what national side. Just cutting a passport and allowing somebody to play for some country ( or stopping someone from playing for some country a la Kolpak ) has got to stop. Even in other sports the French soccer side seems..... never mind. Now the Germans are getting in on the act. The worst abusers in cricket seem to be England and NZ. India is clean as can be. express bowling 1
sage Posted March 10 Posted March 10 That’s because richer countries have more migration. I think there’s a difference between a foreign born player whose parents moved to the country as a child for work/life reasons and someone who specifically moved when they were good at cricket for more opportunities Manucrick 1
Gollum Posted March 10 Posted March 10 (edited) India is 100% local because no one wants to come here. But Indians flock in millions to greener pastures, sometims even by putting themselves at risk (dunki). UK, Australia, NZ and USA attract the best talent worldwide because they offer that quality of life. They deserve to have multi-ethnic players playing for them, just like how Indian/Chinese origin people can go there and make strides in politics, business, STEM. Why do you as an Indian want to control who should play for what side? It is their politics, let them make the call if they want to. Edited March 10 by Gollum Vk1, Lord and Manucrick 1 2
Gollum Posted March 10 Posted March 10 French football system brings in talented kids from dirt-poor African countries, looks after them, trains them to become the best versions of themselves. And they reap rewards, everyone benefits. Maybe out of 600 such kids, 10 make it big, unless they are deporting back the remaining 590 or ill-treating them, I don't think we should complain? If those kids and their families will get a better life that way, so be it. Same with how the Gulf countries bring in talented sportspersons from Africa and give them all facilities, lavish lifestyles etc. so that they win medals for them in Olympics, Asian Games, football etc. Many of those guys even convert to Islam, become citizens and marry, start their families in Qatar/Bahrain/Saudi. Good for them. Should only engineers and doctors seek out better lives or what? Bigg Brother 1
Gollum Posted March 10 Posted March 10 Recently an Aussie footballer took Indian citizenship and is eligible to play for our national side. If India deevlops even to the level of Brazil, Malaysia (and better civic sense, that is our biggest problem) you will get more such cases. Vk1, sage and speedster 3

But then there is no difference between national sports and club sports. If people want to make a nation basically a "club" in sports - fine with me.

Bigg Brother Posted March 10 Posted March 10 Football is totally different. They recruit kids from young age. Read somewhere that Kylian Mbape was on target of three clubs at the age of 12- Monaco,Real Madrid and Man City. Three such big clubs at the age of 12. His parents were his agents and they settled for Monaco. There are so many such stories, these kids become eligible to play for other countries due to rules of citizenship of respective countries.

Not really - one of the reasons for the decline of Brasilian soccer is that the clubs there sell teenage boys to warm the benches of European clubs instead of playing soccer in Brasil itself. Imagine a Pele or Zico warming the benches at Barcelona or Real Madrid or Bayern Munich or Liverpool instead of playing at Santos or Flamengo..... One or two players may be recruited at young age - but quite a few are recruited at age of 15+ to set on benches as subs. You never hear the names as they get washed out but you might have if they had honed skills at Flamengo, Vasco, Portuguese, Santos etc.
express bowling Posted March 10 Posted March 10 (edited) In international cricket, there should be a rule linked to residential status applicable to every country. One should be a Resident of a country for say 7 years before he / she can play international cricket for any country. Edited March 10 by express bowling Suhaan, bowl_out and AKane 3
ungboysj Posted March 10 Posted March 10 (edited) It's important a sporting team represent the ethnic population as it's only way sport will get popular in that country Nri usa team is a joke maybe max 1 migrants or non ethnic player can play in a team You don't want a English team with 11 adil rashids and jofra archers Edited March 10 by ungboysj Suhaan 1
cricketfan28 Posted March 10 Posted March 10 Only way cricket can spread other wise it's always the same 6 or 7 teams.

Also first wicket taken by a bowler born in England." express bowling 1

nevada Posted March 11 Posted March 11 I too was surprised to know that he is from Barbados, where his talent was recognized at a very young age. I wish he had come back to the WI after finishing schooling in England, but it's his choice to go where better opportunities exist. He and Archer playing for the West Indies would have been interesting!
